Howdy fella's,

Over and over the good advice of not bidding on ebay while or after drinking is proproted on this forum. I agree wholeheartedly but often times find myself in noncompliance. This one beats all-albeit of small importance in the world.

After a weekend back in August, I came into work on Monday morning and checked out my email. To my surprise, I had ebay notices that I won an item and needed to pay:confused: I check it out and found I had won this.

Problem was that I didnt even remember being on ebay let alone bidding. Once I glanced at the auction I had flashbacks of this knife being like .25 and I bid just to bid until it got to 4.99 and I was the high bidder. Pleased with myself, I went to bed being the high bidder confident that someone would spend 50 more cents to win it......I was wrong:rolleyes: Now I have a chinese 371 and 373 which I like alot so for 5 bucks and shipping, I'm not too concerned about getting a Trapper. But then I start to check out the facts, tell tail conterfiet Buck box, coming from china, seller with no feedback and I get the sick feeling that I actually bought a chinese counterfiet of a chinese buck. Its double indemnity:eek:

So I have been waitin almost a month for this to come on a slow boat from china and when it finally gets here, it's this.

It looks like a 2005 Buck Mayo Cutback 174 and, of course, not a Buck 380 Trapper

Question is, is it a genuine chinese 174 or a fake chinese 174?

Overall it looks right, the thumb stud looks right

The torx screws on the pocket clip look right

but I'm not sure about the pivot

So, I know many of you couldnt give a rat sass about chinese bucks to begin with, but I am
interested in what those who know or even those who are indifferent think. I havent seen a
good pic of the full knive anywhere to compare.

Fake chinese or genuine chinese:p

Funny that they have the box and the insert paper.
Does the insert look authentic???
Just curious...

Yeah the insert looks authentic. It also has the off shore 2005 date stamp, and I dont pay close attention to the counterfeits but I am not sure if they duplicate the date stamps or not. Seems to me they dont. That is a correct Buck box type but I often see them used with the most ridiculous fakes that dont even try to look like a genuine.

Kev, here's a scan from the catalog showing the picture. The scan doesn't show the pivot or other details as clearly as your photos but looking at it with a magnifying glass, the pivot and screws are identical to yours. I can't find anything that would make me believe that you bought a fake.

Also.....it looks like the real thing.

I have a 179.....yours looks right.

No problem.

Thanks Dave, I tried to pick it up off the BCCI catalogs on the web site but couldnt get a good pic, as I increased size of course the definition went way down. Cool, its kind of a neat little knife, stiff as a board to open and has only got a little better after an oiling.

I never would have bought one of these under different circumstances so not a bad end to the story. I dont go hunting after the china Bucks but I havent been disappointed with one yet.

Congad's man.
Most of these tight wads wouldn't consider a Chinese buck a score any day, but this would be a good day for me. Imagine that, scary Chinese seller ships the wrong knife and you still seem to get a legitimate Buck, with my luck I would open the box to find a Benchmade knock-off or a bunch of Chinese children.

You did ok for BUI, (buying under the influence). ;) It could have turned out worse, he might have sent some thing like this one.

Or this one. Actually it's pretty cool, sort of an Alpha Dorado on steroids. Too bad it's a fake. The color is sort of a turnoff, but I really like the size and design.

I never was much of a chinese anything buyer, but my wife got me a 371 from wally, not knowing any better and it turned out to be a great little knife. Then the fact of ecomonics and things like small percentage china production adds dollars to keep US production strong buffered my opinion. I still dont go running to get em but I got no problems with them so far-very good f&f

Its the pivot on the fakes like that fake strider that made me question the pivot on this one. Similar design.

The pivot is the one thing they seldom get right, even in the one's that they try to make just like a real Buck model.

Been there, done that...have the Chinese Canoe model to show for it. No regrets. Just makes me want to try it again!

I have been edc'ing an identical 174 or a 179 For 5 or more years now. Love the frame lock design, never had one fold on me, and have really beat on them.

I would recommend deploying the clip screws and going back in with some blue locktite.
Lost one of my screws, but clip does fine with two.

Those clips are tight and have never become loose like some other clips have.

I have always thought of the 174/179 as Buck sleepers. Ended up with two each so Grandson now has one of the 174's.

Those were originally around $27 (give or take) retail.

What is interesting on one of my 179's is the year stamp. A "T" laying on its left side just like your 174. We know what that stamp would have been if made in Idaho. :) You have a winner far as I am concerned.

For those that have never had their hands on one of these, the 174 is just shy of the oal of a 112, and the 179 just shy of the oal of a 110

Gotta go along with that. The 179 is one of the very best folding knives, and the best value for the money, that I have ever owned.

It's simply a great knife. I'm sure its partner, the 174--is just as good.

I got this one from Basspro 5 or 6 years ago on close out for $12.99, if I remember right. Yours looks like the real thing to me.

Yeah, not a bad little knife, i like the weight and even though it is the smaller handle, it fitls in my hand. Just dead stiff to open with the thumbstud though, just about wearing my thumb out.
