I suppose most people have seen these 1/2 or 1 hour 'shows'.

I just watched some 'chef' carve up a sledge hammer, a rock, a tin can, and a leather shoe. He then proceeded to slice a tomato very thin. There were numerous examples of him beating the blade to death, and then making a show of how the knife still remained razor sharp.

Hmmm...is this possible or just theatrics?
Any thoughts on this? Are these knives even half as great as what was dipicted?

Welcome ArtyZ !!

Others, smarter than I will chime in shortly I would guess. For now I will give you my take on these knives.
You will most likely notice that all of those knives are serrated blades. When he chops and slices all of those hard surfaces, most likely only the tips of the serrations hit the hard surface. So even if those peaks get dulled by contact with the hard surfaces, the vallys are left untouched and still sharp. When he goes to slice the tomato, which is soft, the dull tips push in allowing the sharp valley to contact and slice cleanly. That has been my thought at least. I have a friend that bought a couple of those sets and he loves them. The wooden knife holding block costs almost as much as all of the knives combined. But he loves them. I am sure they will seem great until the day that they DO get dull. Your average person will not be able to sharpen them. Time to buy another set. That is my take for what little it is worth.
