Hi all - I need your advice, if you please -

I've been "out of the loop" for a few years - and am looking for a tough, effective personal carry - $100 to $200 price range...your suggestions would be MOST welcome :)

3.25" - 4" Fixed blade
1/4"-3/8" thickness
S30V / VG10 type steel
IWB capabilities
wicked edge
good grip, balance and quickness in hand

So bring your recommendations and I'll re-arm my waistband :D

THANKS!

thanks....but I don't want to worry about opening and locking a blade, when the speed of deployment may be the deciding factor...

let's look at Fixed options.....

let's look at Fixed options.....

Rat RC-3 or RC-4 3.88 or 4.5 inch blades with jump molle sheath options. One of my better small fixed blades. Really good varied carry system and very functional blade design. They are 1/8 thick but have wide blades with full tangs, plenty tough enough with good 1095 carbon steel. I find thick stock on less than 5 inches really hampers fine cutting and slicing.

Pohan Leu makes some very nice EDC's. He uses A2 tool steel which I highly recommend. I carry his 4" Kozuka.

Bet I could pull out an axis lock knife or assisted opening knife just as fast as it takes you to unlatch your fixed blade and pull it out. Even if, the difference is a second or two. I know you'll say a second or two is life or death but come on, if you have to pull your knife out split second and stab, won't you still be defending yourself from whatever it is anyways because in order to pull a knife it does take a bit of space and when fighting for your life the last thing you want to do is let down your defense to grab a knife when you can just get rushed. Don't rule out folders, they're just as useful, if not more, and can be concealed or carried more comfortable.

I've never carried one, but A G Russell has a very nice looking Dozier "New York Special", I think it's called, that's designed for CC. It's a FB in just about the size you specified. IIRC, the price is right for you, too.

thanks!
now how about some MORE suggestions? - I know there are a number of great makers out there (along with some decent production blades) to review...

Not to mention in a lot of states, its illegal to carry a fixed blade knife concealed.....unless you have a Concealed WEAPONS Permit, which is issued in states such as Florida, which permit you to carry a concealed pistol, fixed bladed knife, etc......as far as my experience goes, a Concealed HANDGUN Permit does NOT permit you the right to carry a conceal fixed bladed knife......odds are if your forced to use a knife for self-defense, your going to run into a LOT of legal issues...talk to an attorney before proceeding.....just my 2 1/2 cents,:)

As far as knives go, I would have to reccommend the RAT-3 or RAT-4.....its not made of VG10 or S30V, but its affordable, and it'll take whatever you throw at it.....

.....sounds like your describing a Spyderco Street Beat to a "T"; it's a beautifully made yet substantial fixed blade made for personal carry. Designed by Fred Perrin with great ergos, a VERY handsome micarta handle, and executed in VG-10. They rarely turn up used on our for sale sub-forum, and when one does it typically sells quickly.......just one indication of the Street Beat's reputation. I think you can get one for about $140 new...not inexpensive, but then again it's a fixed blade that can cover a lot of ground.

Anybody have experience with the Spyderco Kumo? (looks like a takeoff on the RJ Martin Manta Ray)
yes, I own one. Thin, whisper-light, razor-sharp, quick in the hand. The handle can get uncomfortable when used for prolonged periods....but typically this type of knife isn't going to be employed for bushcraft duties. The sheath is a bit funky; my Kumo "rattles around" in it. Not a deal breaker. Be careful when stabbing with this knife...no guard ! I like the knife a lot....but it's "intended use" is limited.

I think u can get some decent size buck or benchmade knives that would do the trick, maybe a benchmade ally knife, I recently purchased the BUch Revolution, where its has a clip for ur belt loop, then u press a button and the blade spins out...so when its not in use the blade is not exposed...tricky! Although if ur using a knife to defnd ur life...that's a bad situation, i alwats carry a small knife, but i also took martial arts for a long time as a better back up.

do yourself a favor and take a real hard look at the Spyderco Endura WAVE.

I can deploy it faster than my Spyderco Citadel, an automatic, YMMV.

I favor always taking a gun to a knife fight whenever possible however I am old and need such advantages.

He makes some real good knives that are all fixed blades. Check him out, he's on this forum. Also Fehrman knives are made of 3v steel and they have a Thru Hiker that is very nice. I carry it on my chest rig and hardly notice it's there.

For Fixed, concealed, personal defense I like the Dozier line best out of all mentioned so far. Also, the ZT & Perrin.
To this, I'd like to add the Al Mar backup series. Comes in Tanto or Hawkbill. Yeah, It's Aus8 but that's more than sufficient for the stated use.
Do yourself a favor though, explore the custom market, you just may surprise yourself. But if you go production, you'd never trade or sell your Dozier.;)

That's just my .01 (waiting for MY bailout, too!!!)
