They had very few Buck knives. Nothing out of the ordinary or interesting or on sale.

The guy told me Buck was coming back after making the mistake of switching all their production to China. He said everybody quit buying them so they had to bring production back to the U.S. I just smiled.

But.....they did have a CRKT knife on sale. Beautiful little three-inch fixed blade with pretty burl wood handles, fancy rivets and generally looking of real quality.

It had Leupold etched on the blade.....some kind of centennial thing or something. It was leftover from a Leupold promotion and was $29.95 marked down from $99.95.

I looked at the blade and it didn't say U.S.A. but the guy said it was made in the U.S.A. I was about ready to buy it when I noticed that the box had "Made in China" on it. I pointed that out and he laughed and said maybe the box was made in China. I laughed and left.

But I learned that blades don't have to be marked "China" if the box is marked.

That was interesting.

There was a lot of lying going on. I suspect the knife never had a retail price at all......they just made one up and then marked it way down.

Oh well, I bought some ammo.

Our first Cabelas in Oregon opened today. Its about 125 miles from where I live, and I had to work anyway. The paper did say that Chuck Buck would be there though, and it would have been cool to meet him in person

Ours is showing some signs of the hard times.

They had a beautiful restaurant seating area under a huge wilderness mural. No more. That space has been filled with racks of merchandise and a small seating area is crammed in on the other side of the restaurant.

They also used more of their storage area to create more retail area.

I noticed more hard selling and way more lying and misinformation.

This used to be a comfortable and friendly small-town type of place. It's becoming more of a "pack'em in tight and get their money" type of place.

You can see there's been pressure for more profits.

Too bad. I used to like the place a lot better.

i stopped shopping there a cuple years ago. had more bad experiences than good. its not worth even walking into. high prices, rude employee's.

I could soon get to that point as well.

At our Cabela's you can see the footprints of a big-city efficiency expert who was called in to up the profits.

Damned fool doesn't know that some of us came there because it was spacious and attractive had a nice atmosphere and a friendly, slow pace.

So I wonder......how much did they gain with their changes?

And......back to knives--I suppose the big spreads of China knives bring them a lot more profit than the Buck Knives, but that may cost them when people like you and me don't stop by anymore.

I go to Cabelas but I rarely buy there. I go into the bargain cave and the clearance prices are generally higher than what I can buy the item for online.
