I am looking to purchase the midsized "Scout" knife on this page :

Will the stock sheath hold up well, in your opinion, or, if not, how much would you charge to make me one?

(I'm a hearty DIY'er, but I have nothing for leather making, and could get by cheaper my having a sheath made, I think...)

Do you have any examples of your work?

Some of the finest sheath makers in the world post in this very sub-forum. Take a look at some of the threads here, especially the "show off your leather thread". Find one of the sheaths in that thread that you like and ask the person who made it to make one for you.

If you can't find something you like from one of the folks who posts here I would be very surprised.:)

To answer your question about the stock sheath that comes with the knife.
It appears to be a clicker cut, mass produced simple sheath made from the cheapest leather or leather substitute available that day. The only hand work associated with the sheath would probably be when the sewing machine operator flipped the switch to the on position. As such it would be a VERY inexpensive sheath and subsequent quality would be suspect at the very best and with moderate use should fail fairly quickly I should think.

Based on some of your statements in the balance of your post/posts I got the impression that price was/is a factor of considerable weight with you. If this is indeed the case, then a custom made quality sheath would probably be beyond what you might deem reasonable in price, but would none the less be vastly better in a. design, b. quality, c. looks, and d. longevity and even at a substatial increase in cost, might prove to be the least expensive in the long run.

A custom sheath for the knife you selected would be about $100 from my shop, and would have a lifetime guarantee. (My lifetime). thanks.

Paul

How about a "custom" sheath with nothing customized? A banger sheath would be fine with me, nothing fancy, but not horrendously ugly, either. Any pricing ideas? I looked in the "Show off Your Leather" thread, and I'd be happy with most any sheath from there! Great work, guys! (I wish I had the tools and time....)
