I don,t know if this is a forbidden subject here . Any of you guys play chicken as a kid ? You know the game two players face each other about six feet away facing each other with legs in a wide stance . Your opponent has to throw their knife between your feet without touching them . If the knife sticks in the ground you must move the close foot up to the knife . This in effect gives your opponent a much narrower target space . It is then your turn to throw with the same objective . If your opponent refuses to let you throw cause his feet are too close together ,you win . If either player touches the boot or shoe of their opponent in any manner they lose as well .

I,m just trying to find out the games we used to play as kids . .

I did!

And that was Chicago in my teenage years (early 1980s). We even called it 'chicken,' so that's interesting... usually you get variations in name and style across geographic distances, but your post is a perfect match.

Mumbleypeg (or mumblety-peg) was stabbing the tip of the blade in and out from between your fingers.... or it was for us.

REPLY: While I heard it spelt different . I think it is the same game . I have heard of a variation where you stood the knife(handle) on your knee and made it flip into the ground or a wood floor. (preferably not momma,s kitchen ! ) If it stuck you took it and did it off your elbow and then off your shoulder and then off your forehead .

I have heard of a game called "stretch" which is kinda the opposite of" Chicken "

We used to play a game called
"Catch the lawn dart" But it caught on too fast to become popular! L:O:L .

And if you were no good, you stuck it *in* your forehead... :D

My dad taught me the game "chicket" but we called it "stick" and you faced each other and you threw at the others feet a foot or so off and if it stuck you moved the foot there and then it was the others turn. If you stuck it between their legs they had to turn around ( 180 ) and keep playing. The idea was to make the other person spread their legs too far apart and fall down. And I never knew the name for putting your hand out and going between the fingers, I'm F@#$ing fast though doing it!!

I did, until the day that I stuck the knife in my brother's calf and he ran screaming to my mother and she took away our toys. His feet were about a foot apart at the time.

I wasn,t going to say this but my brother got a pair of 2 foot pruning shears to stick into my foot good enough to stand up by themselves . I didn,t run to Momma . Unfortunately she was right there at the time .

i remember "mumbleypeg" (still have finger scars to prove it, lol...
we played 'chicken' but called it "stretch" out here in the west. ahhhh thanks for the memories...

played chicken as described, stretch, and mumbly peg and eat the peg

Mumbly peg is a game involvinh fliping a pocket knie off of each finger tip palm & back of hand wrist elbow, shoulder and head (twice, one on the way up then one on the way down) if oyu miss you can chance it to keep your turn going but if you miss agian then you have to go back to your pinke and start again. If you lose at eat the peg you have to pull a peg from the ground with your teeth. many times knives were bet as to who would win.

Eat the peg ? Pass the ketchup please ! L:O:L
Sounds like a couple of your ways are closer to the source .

Playing for knives could get pretty serious .

I have a new game . It is called count the fingers . Its a game I would play right after playing one of your games ! L:O:L

I think it was Claude Akins ? Anyway Johnny was almost Akin when Mr. Akin performed a trick . There was an outline of Johnny on a wood target and when Mr. Akin shot ? Lets just say it landed a bit low . Below the belt low !
I never did find out if it was a miss or a joke . I betcha Johnny didn,t find it funny ! L:O:L

no not Claude Akins but Ed Ames, who had a part on the old "Daniel Boone Show" as the indian "Mingo". that scene with Johnny Carson is pretty priceless. back then they probably had a few drinks behind them already, lol.

I coulda swore it was an Akins ! I guess they both must be big bears . There is a commercial selling the tape and that shot is on there .
The best knife throwing I ever saw was at the Great Escape . There was a juggler ther with huge throwing knives . He juggled them to beat the band and then was throwing one in the floor in front of him and picking it up with the next hand and juggling it in cycle while throwing the next knife into the floor . This was done quick as any juggling . Thunk ,thunk ,thunk !
