The traditional stuff is silk cord and I think Bugei Trading Co, among others, carry it. Very expensive. On most "western" knives and using pieces, most people just use really long shoelace material. Works pretty well, actually.
Scott; go to your local fabric and sewing store. They should have a section in there that sells decorative trim, ribbon and a bunch of other ****. The one I went to had an excellent substitute for silk cord. It was kind of a combination between silk and a shoe lace. It was available in different colors and widths.

Hi Scott, Don't be afraid of spending a little money on silk. You usually have to spend a little money to make a little. I don't put silk on everything Japanese I do but on my tanto's all I will use is pure silk. The cord comes in 3 different sizes. Katana size (thick and wide) Wakizashi (a little thiner and narrower) and Tanto (the thinest and narrowest). It runs about $3.00 a ft. unless you but 100ft you can get it for $2.50. On my tanto's I use about 7 ft. Bugei does carry it and so does Fred Lohman. I get mine from Fred. His address is http:/www.japanese-swords.com
Hope this helps
Lonnie
Thanks for all the advice. I went ahead and got some from Fred Lohman. He was very helpfull and the price was reasonable. I will post a pic when I am done, if it is worth looking at.

I would like to see pics even if the handle doesnt turn out good. I have been making handles and wrapping handles for Japanese blades for a while now. I'm just now starting to get into forging them. I plan to mostly do traditional style blades, what desighn is this one you're fixing to wrap?
