I had some time to kill this AM so I grabbed a coffee and headed out to the park to try out my new hatchet. I picked this beauty up from John at his get-together last weekend and I'm VERY impressed. It's about 10 1/2" long and made from 1/4" O1 steel with a 3" cutting edge. It came shaving sharp and stayed that way after chopping, carving, batonning and splitting. By the way, the hatchet excelled at all of these tasks.

I'd also like to give a shout out to kyturkey for the great flints and TheZenful1 for the char cloth (nice cook job) and fatwood. Anyway, back to the hatchet. Very comfortable in the hand when using as a chopper, great control when choking up on the shaft for push cutting and slicing. There is just enough length along the spine from poll to scales to be able to baton through fairly big stuff. Did I say it was sharp? :D

I'll post a more detailed review after I get a chance to work with it a little more. There are a lot of different uses that I want to experiment with, but I can tell you right now that this hatchet is a winner.

It was a great morning at the lake too. I had the place to myself, and my coffee was still hot after getting the fire started. I tried a little something different with my twine tinder bundle today. I added some dryer lint to give it a bit more longevity after flare-up. I think it made a difference today because all my gathered kindling was pretty moist and needed longer to catch. Thanks for reading!

That's a great looking little area there too, Jeff! Yeah, it looks like you have a pretty good idea of how to use that hatchet! I keep me a fairly good ziplock bag of dryer lint in my fire bag all the time!

I can`t wait to see more in use pictures!

The "in use" pics are tough when you're flying solo. I tried to take a photo of the tinder nest flaring up and burned my fingers. The shot was all blurry too.

In spite of the less than enthusiastic response to this thread, this is a nice piece of gear. You guys should check out the January Special.

I can`t believe the lack of responses to this thread! I personaly enjoy seeing these "in use" threads.

Anxiously waiting for detailed review! Haven't used the fiskars yet I got from John, thought about it today, but tired from my Matthisen hike.

Did finish my firekit though. It has a magnesium fire starter, a tin knife(John), a bic lighter, a piece of flint(kyturkey), finger's length of fatwood(thezenful1), some char cloth(thezenful1), a firesteel(John), and a fire pouch(John). You guys helped me out!

Hi Jeff -

Looks like that hatchet found a great home!

I loved handling that (when you would put it down lol....)

The January special is a cool idea - I hope Stomper sells a few of those sets.

I have been very busy, so I am not posting as much as I normally have in the past - I love seeing the pictures and reading the stories - I usually will not post from my phone as I am not as good with that.

Thanks for the pictures and don't chop down all the trees in your yard!

best regards -

Probably a good idea for John to keep a bag of dryer lint handy. After all, it's made up of those jeans he so easily ignites!

That hatchet sure does look good. I like the convex on it. Nice work to all involved. I'm going to have to get another JK in the near future. I just have not been able to decide which one.

The hatchet looks great in the pictures but you almost have to feel it in your own hand to appreciate the heft, balance and sheer chopitude of this JK. You pick it up and want to use it. This is a tool that, with a little care, will chop campfire wood for several generations.

Looks like you were able to take her out for a test spin JDS1, I probably wouldn't try any solo in-use pics either!

I am picturing one with that yellow G10.....

That`s only $10 more.....you know you want one. ;)
