JK Knife & Making Char cloth

The JK knife I use the most is my walnut Kephart John made for me. It was part of a traditional run he did a while back. I use this knife for everything from cutting steaks, my various "Woodland Adventures", and even to assist me in making char cloth.
I noticed in my grab bag that my tin was getting low on char cloth. I've always preferred using flint & steel whenever possible to make my fires. I know, lighters and matches are easy, as are the fire steels, but I like the traditional method the best. I was down to three pieces left.

I decided to fire up the grill and restock my tin. I cut up my 100% cotton pieces and placed them in my can with some tin foil as a lid. Remember to poke a small hole in the top of the tin foil for air.

After a while on the fire the smoke starts pouring out.

While the char cloth is "cooking" I'm cutting up some string to make a nest. I like to test a piece of the cloth once it's done. Plus I like to play as the Wife says.

Once we have the pieces cooked we need to test the batch.

She's throwing good sparks!

We get a spark to catch on the char cloth and we're in business!

Get it into the "nest" and start blowing air.

I'm finding more and more I use this knife for everything throughout the day. It's tough and always works whatever I'm using it for.
Tonight we're grilling strip steaks and she's getting called out again to work!
:)

Great sequence of photos mrbear. Love the paw print embelishment too.

It was funny. The Wife was taking pics for me and laughed. She said she knew I did this in the woods but never really saw me do it "live".
;)

Next.......she learns. She's good with a fire steel.

Very cool, thanks for sharing. I need to make some to replenish my kit as well.
I too love the bear paw!

Hi mrbear -

I love the bear paw insignia - very nice customization of your JK!

I have never seen char cloth before - thanks for the instructions on making that!

best regards -
