Just a quick note of thanks to John for holding such an event.
It's nice to be on a forum where it's interactive (now that I got my picture to display correctly from photobucket ;))and not the usual back biting, complaining you see on other forums.
Well done Sir  and thank you.

I agree. Some of the other forums have regulars who can't wait to pounce on anything so to feed their own egos. Internet tough guys.
Thanks John for the contest.

I was a moderator for years on a very well known firearms forum and got so tired of it I left completely and haven't been back since.

Agreed--thank you for the opportunity John! This forum is always a positive experience, which is something a lot of forums can't claim.

It has been a year already from the last one?!?! Time flies! Wish I had some creative juices flowing, I'm not getting anything worthwhile.

Thanks for the chance John, I love seeing everyones designs !

Maybe we could start another thread to discuss them ?

 to John's generosity hosting this comp. Hopefully it will drum up some interest.

I think so far Mentors EDC is really speaking to me! It would do well on its own and really pair well with a bigger fixed blade. It reminds me of a modern roachs belly!

Uh-oh. It speaks to me sometimes, too. That usually means that it is time for me to put away the sharpening stones and single malt and call it a night ... ;)

John, thanks for holding another great contest. I always enjoy seeing what everyone comes up with. So far, this batch includes some interesting designs.

All the best,

- Mike

Hi guys -

I too appreciate the effort Stomper puts out to make this forum a friendly place - and I think it is too cool that he does this anniversary knife contest.

The only bad thing is coming up with my design after seeing all the great submissions already in the official thread!

best regards -

All of the designs in there are great, and I have to say, I'm really digging Redsnake's design--it's kind of a clip-pointed nessmuk shape.

I'll admit, I'm kind of partial to longer (5"-6") blades when I'm out in the woods, so my design is probably less suited to most people's tastes than the other designs :P

Thanks for the contest John! It's always interesting to check out all the designs.

Some great designs so far, I hope we see some more before it's over !

It's always hard in this kinda thing knowing what to draw. Do you draw something that looks cool and you hope will appeal to the most people so you stand a chance of winning or do you draw what you feel you'd use the most even though it isn't particularly great to look at so chances are you won't win ?

This time I have gone with the latter, as time goes on I'm gradually learning what does and doesn't work for me and that's how I came up with my Big Paw Knife.Just looking at the drawing I can envisage myself sat at the side of a camp fire waiting for my coffee to boil, maybe preparing some veggies for supper or whittling away at a walking stick to take on my hike the following day.

Gotta stop looking soon though, I have changed it 3 times so far !!!!!:o

I was hoping that the other people who entered the comp might want to discuss their designs a little ? Why did they pick that design, what they intend it used for etc ?

Pit,

Glad you’re generating a little discussion on the designs.

I’ll do my best to share what my thoughts are behind my design. It’s supposed to be a 4 season belt knife that I can carry for any woods pursuit.

A design that I can use year round needs to do the following:

Hunting - this includes field dressing, skinning, and even processing the meat

Fishing – gutting and field filleting small to medium fish (16” and under trout and small mouth)

Backpacking /camping – processing fire wood, cut food, open packages

Bushcraft/survival – obviously some overlap with the above, but in addition needs to have a comfortable handle for extended woodcraft, edge geometry that really bites into wood, and a cutting edge that comes right to the handle

So basically I attempted to design a knife that could execute many traditional wilderness functions that didn’t just look like another bushcrafter or drop point hunter (two of my favorite patterns). The long clip point blade is a shape I’ve loved since childhood, and the handle profile is based on my favorite kitchen knife.

I’m excited to see what everyone else comes up with. I'm really digging some of the designs so far.

Sounds good Brandon, I really like the shape of your blade !
You put Scandi or Convexed on your drawing, do you think one grind would be better overall than another ? From the tasks you describe I'd imagine convexed might be the best choice !

I like the look of bkduckworth's blade.

As for my own design, it's based on - well, a direct copy of - my self-made EDC. It's a small, thin scandi that is ideal for everyday tasks, whether in the woods or in the city. I get asked about it every time I post pictures of it, so I thought it would make sense to submit the design. My own knife started life as a rectangular-handle 'cobbler's knife' blank from Ragweed Forge, and it is made from Nameless Carbon Steel (TM). O-1 would definitely hold a better edge.

All the best,

- Mike
