Yesterday I was looking at some knife photos on the web and saw several 'MS' stamps. It then dawned on me that there is probably a similar Journeyman Smith stamp.

Thus far I've made knives for myself only, but I'm stamping the tang with my initials, which happen to be JS. Is there a Journeyman Smith stamp and is it JS? No one will confuse my stuff with a real JS's, but I don't want to encroach.

Yes JS, there are a lot of knives out there with "JS" stamped on them.

I guess you will just have to change your name :p

Just kidding, it's pretty hard to say it's encroaching if it's your name!

Go here and you can find out all about it!!! :D

The American Bladesmith site is pretty informative. I'd read about ABS this and ABS that before but never actually looked at their site.

I won't worry too much about my stamp for the time being. I was planning on getting an etching setup and getting away from initials anyway. I just didn't want to give one of these blades away, have the recipient show it to their friend and leave the friend with the impression that I'm a certified skilled smith. I'm just some guy in his garage with a homemade grinder.

Thanks for the info.

I may be wrong, but I don't think anybody stamps their knives with just "JS".

Usually:

Joe Knifemaker, JS (or MS)

at most

Some do a company name

Some do just the last name

Personally, if I picked up a knife with "JS" stamped on it - I would immediately assume it was the makers initials.

Hi,
I like the JSJS idea. Actually I believe you will find that most of the smiths put the maker name on the side facing left and their rating stamp, the JS or MS on the side facing right. (In the Hand)
Enjoy, Ken

Well now there is a slippery minner!?
My Initials are JMS,
I sometimes use all three, some days just JS, or MS. Depends on which one of us is workin that day?
Some days we don't all get along:confused: ?

JS, I have looked at this thread, I don't know for sure, several times. If that's what your Pop and Mom gave you use it. Who cares about what someone else trying to twist it into something you don't intend. It is your proud name. Mine is RL. If it stood for Royal Lacky I'd stamp it deep.:) (perhaps it appropriate for me though).

The JS (Journeyman Smith) stamp is in cursive like the MS stamp is, so it's unlikely anyone would mistake it for someone's initials.

I like the JSJS idea too! :D That'd almost be enough to drive one to to pass the test...

Lucky me, I have a Howard Clark damascus folder with a JS stamp on it! It's one of my favorite things.
