Junk = Shim

Going through some junk a while back I came across some old 3x5 floppy discs. Tossed one, tossed two, tossed three into the trash...four into the trash...hey wait, I can do something with these things..

I snapped off the thin metal shield and made a shim to open a cheap lock I had on my desk. Sure you can buy a shim set and keep it in your wallet or "kit"...but if you know the principal behind it, you'll have more shims than you'll know what to do with. And what if you've been seperated from your "gear" for whatever reason? Keep an eye out for crap like this laying around. You can open a lock and since you didn't take a sledge to it, you can put it right back in place when you're done.

I'll admit if you're in a bind and need to shim a lock, you might not have a pair of scissors on you, and I chould have done this the hard way, but I thought of that later on. I actually didn't even use the SOG there on the desk. You could use the edge of a table or any other right angle to bend and break most thin metal..

A picture is worth one thousand words, and these are pretty self explanitory;

This little tooth is what you're trying to actuate...most high end locks have one in both holes, so that means two shims.

That's a heck of an idea. You are smarter than me. I never would have thought of that.

Wow, those poor people locking thier bikes with those cheap combo locks are in trouble now.

a beer/pop can works well too. i haven't had to use it yet but the principal is the same. a hell of a lot easier to find a can too

I've got about a hundred of the 3 1/2 floppies.

Now that the secret is out, I figure I can get at least $10 each for them.

Whatta ya think?

The 'good' old days of 5.25 floppy drives :) just had some nice memories.. Anyone else remembers that old trick to "staple" the 5.25 with an additional notch on the side so you could write on both sides of the disk? Man, we thought we are the super hackers when we figured that out :)

lol, reminds me of a pic I've recently seen.
A bike outside some venue where lockpickers had some workshops, with a letter attached to please relock the bike and a sheet of paper with opening times ...
