It was a nice day in the woods today. High was about 65 with sun and low humidity.

I hit pay dirt in fatwood...

Thanks for looking and stay safe out there - WB

Thanks for sharing. N.C. is a beautiful state. I've been there a few times.

Nice shots man, looks like you really did hit pay dirt there. The pollen has been out with a vengeance here for a few weeks now and I have to keep a stash of sinus medicine to keep my head from exploding from the pressure. Good to see some foxes still around somewhere I've been trying to figure out if the invading coyotes killed off the foxes here or just drove them away, either way I haven't seen any fox scat in this area in a very long time now. How are you liking that Ka-Bar?

Yeah, I know what you mean. This was in a designated wilderness that I frequent. For some odd reason, the coyote population has not exploded within here as it has in the surrounding areas. I believe there are more readily available food sources around all of the farms nearby. I've seen signs of a fairly impressive fox population in here.

I really like the Potbelly. I was a bit apprehensive at first, but the more I use it, the more I love it. It's like an axe and a razor blade had an illegitimate love child. The handle is really versatile. You can choke up for several different holds when doing detailed work but holding it at the hilt with a lanyard turns it in to chopping machine. Of course it also has the excellent edge retention and ease of sharpening that you'd expect from 1095 Cro-Van. It's a nice package.

Some new pants that I made for it...

We used to have a really healthy fox population here, red and gray...so healthy I took part in thinning it out some back in the early 80s and got even heavier into the fur trapping trade when my uncle and a couple of other farmers on the mountain here told us we could trap on their lands, practically begging us to trap out some of the ones that were killing off their hens at an alarming rate. We trapped several of them over the next few years but not enough to really put a dent in the overall population here. The bottom dropped out of the fur trade and we went back to primarily commercial fishing. Back then, even after the trapping stopped here you could hardly walk 30 meters through the woods without finding fox scat on a log or a rock. I was comparing notes with my brother a while back and it's been years since either of us ran across a pile of fox scat in the woods here.

I noticed the handle was designed to be very versatile and has a nice weight forward blade for chopping...and I really love what Ka-Bar does with that 1095CV, some awesome steel that they typically do an awesome heat treat on. I just wasn't sure how I'd feel about the hollow grind and have been waiting for the return of the machaxe to give it a go since I missed it the first time around, thinking from seeing it in the pictures in mags that it was bigger than it really is. Hearing your thoughts on it I may have to give it a go at some point.

In all seriousness, I tell you what I'll do. Buy a Potbelly for the lowest price you can find and take it to the woods a few times. If you don't love it, I'll buy it from you. You've got nothing to lose. I didn't steer you wrong with the ESEE 6, did I? ;)
