Being married is great!!!
With some of our wedding money, I convinced my wife that we must get a treadmill,
I have been out of shape and getting fatter for some time, but not anymore.
She assembled it today, and I already got a 1/2 hour workout, and I FEEL GREAT!!!!
I am a firm believer that a healthy body=healthy mind, it helps to regulate your sleep, your digestion, your moods, your hunger, etc.
Since I am school I really have no time to go out and get excersize anywhere else, and this is extremely convenient, and yes, I will use it, because I did before, and I always feel really good after working,
so, gosh darn it, congratulate me!!!

As you say, the benefits of regular exercise are quite broad. Virtually every part of the body benefits.

A treadmill huh? Are you going to have to change your nickname then? Something like "Walkinginplaceman" or "Walkingbutnotgoinganywhereman"? :D

One plain Digestive biscuit = 75 calories

Male 30, 5' 9", 180 lbs, running at 6 mph uses 14 calories in 1 min.

(Calculator here.)

Therefore to "burn off" one plain biscuit, you need to run for more than 5 minutes at a decent pace on a $1,000 treadmill.

Or, you could save $1,000.05 and not eat the biscuit... ;)

I'm very much in favour of exercise, but it's an inefficient way to lose weight.

Otter, I COMPLETELY disagree.
It's the only way to lose weight. (for me)
Okay, in and of itself, yes, excersize is inefficient, however you are missing the secondary benefits:
1) if you're walking, you're not eating (time removal of opportunity to eat)
2) metabolism increases throughout entire day, not just during workout.
3) appetite is modified. Food becomes more satisfying and desire to eat is reduced. Also, Because I'm feeling good about myself working out, "nervous eating" is removed.
.
So, okay, by excersizing you may be inefficiently removing calories, but you are also better armed to "remove the biscuit"
(this is all just my opinion, of course)
.
Oh, and Planterz, that was pretty funny. Thanks for the laugh. :)

Dude, u da man!!!

I myself have mutated into a fat blob since getting married, and I really should do something about it. We have a treadmill, but I gave up on it some time ago due to sheer boredom. BEWARE of this!! If you do get bored, break up the exercise routine with outdoor jogging or get a bike.

Regular exercise will literally melt the pounds off, and elevate your mental state.

Another word of caution - you may lose so much weight that you will spend hundreds of dollars on new pants. But that's a GOOD thing!

Why is it that a lot of people actually grow fatter when they get married?

I just didn't realise i was blobbing up. Now it's too late. Too many pants have been sacrificed. I just can't find the motivation to exercise nowadays. I enrolled in a gym but i just find that i always need to do university work or housework etc.

I guess having a treadmill at home will help out. But knowing me it'd be a clothes hanger in a few weeks time.

Hey walking man...do update us on your weight loss. Tell us your weight now so we can keep track of you and make fun of you if you don't lose weight. I bet that'll be motivation enough.

Less motivation to stay looking good (or at least, as good as us ugly folk can be). Once you've ensnared someone into the web of wedlock, they're stuck with your fat, balding self. :p

Congratulations! Now can I borrow your wife? I have some stuff I could never get assembled like bookcases, storage unit, bicycle, lawnmower, 3 gas grills...

:D

There are only three ways to loose weight that really do work:

1) Eat Less

2) Exercise More

3) Surgery

Of these, number three is the most dramatically effective. But, it is also the most expensive and the most risk-fraught. That leaves most of us with just eatting less and exercising more. To loose a pound of fat, one needs to cut about 3500 Calories from one's intake. That'd be about 47 of those biscuits. Unless one is really into digestive biscuits, one is unlikely to loose weight dramatically by simply cutting out digestives.

In fact, sustained weight loss through a healthy combination of sensible diet and moderate exercise rarely exceeds about one pound per week average. But, this is the sensible way to do it.

Exercise is one part of that process and exercise has other benefits too.

Something that I insist on is to leave the treadmill right in the middle of the house where I spend the most time, that way it won't be forgotten about. You have to make exercise easy and convenient for yourself. I think we all know the hardest part about joining a gym is walking through the door.
Also, a Television and/or radio in front of your treadmill can make it a friendly place that you can get away from reality for a while.

Hey, I was thinking, there seems to be a fair amount of talk about excersize, and the like, so what would you guys think about petitioning for a new forum, possibly under tactics and training?

A lot of people recommend resistance training for weight loss, in addition to regular vigorous exercise. Apparently muscle burns more calories than other tissue, so if you can add a pount of muscle you can burn more calories in your sleep!

Congratulations on starting your exercise program. Sounds like you are well on your way to better health. Keep it up!

When I was outside for my daily constitutional, it was dark as heck due to the short days and overcast sky. The air temperature was 5 degrees, and the wind was 30mph, gusting to 50mph. As I looked around, I realized that I have been the only one out on my regular route in December. In the spring and summer, there are a lot of people jogging, walking their dog, roller blading, and biking. Even in the very early morning when I go. In November, there was still one dude on a bike and one hard *** that jogged every day in a wife-beater T shirt and shorts. Now even they are gone. Guess we've separated the wheat from the chaff... :D

Motivation...Where, how? I need to lose weight (just ask my doctor.:D), but I just can't get motivated. I'm a medic, and I KNOW that I should exercise and eat right, but I'm a procrastinator...I'll do it "tomorrow", but "tomorrow" never gets here. With my job at a college, I have total acess to an excellent fitness lab/weight-room, and GOOD trainers and coaches, but I still haven't hooked-up.

How do I get motivated?

Glockman,
IF you're really serious,
check out this website:

Motivation extrordinare.
Really.
It will change your life..
.
And there are other ways too, like hiring a trainer, and getting a group or couple of buddies together to keep each other in line.

Glockman, you gotta find something that you enjoy doing. If it's a chore, you won't stick with it.

Do you own a bike? People who haven't ridden for a long time sometimes forget how much fun that is. Colleges usually have easy access for bikes. Maybe try biking to work.

Or how about swimming? That is a great workout, very relaxing, and easy on the knees. When I had access to a pool, I used to eat half my lunch in the morning and half in the afternoon, then use my noon hour to go swimming. Worked out real well. If that's not enough motivation, think about a pool full of college women in bathing suits...:)

Have a tough day with the boss? Maybe get yourself an old tire and beat the snot out of it with an escrima stick.

There are all kinds of possibilities, just pick something that you like.
