I just recieved a knife that I have coveted for over a year, a G10 serrated Civilian. I have a few questions for someone from spyderco. First off, why were some handles made of carbon fiber? I thought that since this is a tactical self defense weapon, grip-i-ness on the blade would be key, and carbon fiber in my experience has been slick. Also, why is there one screw in the frame that is removable? There are 2 rivets, but one screw, (Im not talking about the blade pivot)Why is that? Finally when the knife is open, I push the lock in and out, and it feels like there is some sort of friction. Does that just need to be oiled, or is that a problem? Thanks ahead of time for answering my questions, I don't want people to get the wrong idea, I love this knief, I'm planning on buying more.

My CF Civvie has 3 screws. As for the CF, I think that, unless you're holding it in a pinch grip between two fingers, the shape of the handle affords plenty of retention. Also, the edges of the handle are a matte finish, rather than polished, adding to the grippiness.

Just for grins, I just wet mine down, and used a screwdriver through the Spyderhole to try pulling or pushing it through my grip. Although there was slight movement in the palm, the contours on the handle always held it firm once they were engaged. Of course, I have small hands, and larger hands would probably be right on the palm swell and the butt curve.

Granted, I'd probably want the tuffram insert Civvie if I wanted the ultimate in retention, but I'm quite happy with the CF, and have full confidence.

After a few minutes of admiration, the first thing I do with any new knife is lube the pivot. I'd sure try that, and see if it helps things. If it remains gritty, I'd get on the horn and call Spyderco, rather than posting.

Carbon fiber-for collectors, or just something different.

Screw-should go to the pivot for the lock bar. Makes possible repairs to the knife much easier (as well as assembly probably).

Friction-the metal to G10 contact areas may just need a little break in, but a little lubricant won't hurt anything.
