Just shaved my head...any advice?

Well, after years and years and years of thinking about it, I finally shaved my head. I've always had this fear that if I shaved my head, my hair would never grow back again. I buzzed my head a few weeks ago just to see how I would like it and today I took the razor to it. I just figured I wanted to see what I look like bald. Doesn't look too bad, but I think that it'll look a lot better when my head tans a little to match the rest of me.

Any advice from people who've already done this? Like, do you still shampoo your scalp, or do you just soap it along with the rest of your body? I already figure I need to put sunscreen on my head since my scalp has never seen the light of day. How often do you shave it--every day? Do you use shaving gel on your head, or just soap to shave? Lots of stuff I didn't think about before I did this.

This feels really funky and cool at the same time. I don't know that I'm going to stick with it like this, but we'll see. At least it'll grow in pretty quickly if I don't like it.

Just wash it just like you do anywhere else. When you shave use a good lather and a sharp blade. I shaved my head for about a year till I got tired of buying razor blades :D . I had to shave my head every day, sometimes twice if I was going out, but that was because my wife loved it smooth and hated the stubble. BTW since your head is smooth hats don't want to stay on in strong winds.

Hat sounds good :P

I did the same thing a few years ago but everyone said my head was way too ugly so I let it grow back .

I have shaved my head for the past five years but i let it start to grow back after about a month or two, i call it my annual hair cut! :D To keep it smooth i was able to get by shaving about every other day. No need for shampoo, soap will work but the money you save in shampoo you will spend on razor blades  I was thinking for my next haircut i would do "mohawk for a day" just to mess with my co-workers. ;) :D :D

For several years I'd been using a "beard & mustache" electric shaver on my beard AND on my head. Stubble forever! Every so often I would shave it smooth and keep it that way for a while, then let the stubble grow back.

I think I looked like a chimp with mange. But as long as you don't insist on shaving it really smooth, it is easier to maintain -- and a lot easier to "comb" first thing in the morning. :D

(Recently I let my hair grow long again. Until I retired, I used to have it growing down to my collar.)

As long as you wash it thoroughly, a good safety razor should keep it smooth. I would suggest soap & water, shave right there in the shower, and soap & water it again, to clean up any nicks.

I had a friend who had his girl friend give him a haircut. I think they were both a little messed up when they did it. Half way through it he said "Stop, that looks good."
He came to work with one side short and the other long (almost afro). He'd show the short side and say "Clear-cut" whip around and say "old growth".
It's a logging reference that means more here in the P.N.W.
After a week of getting strange looks (which is what he was after) he did it all "clearcut"..

Man, I can't get over how weird this feels...

Nope, not drunk, just finally doing something I've wanted to do for a long time. I doubt I'll be diligent enough to keep it smooth all the time, but I may revert back to it every now and then. The hat not staying on is interesting--hadn't thought about that. We'll see what kind of reaction I get when I go to work tomorrow. My mom was weirded out when she saw it, but I think it's growing on her. Hopefully no one will tell me my head's too ugly to be bald. Maybe when/if it grows back I'll dye it green or something.

As far as hats go, I found that smooth-shaven, hats stay on fine, with stubble, they stay on very well. It's when my hair is long that hats slide off the hair.

Hey, Brother...welcome to the fold!

I shaved mine about a year and a half ago, after finally wearing down the wife's resistance. At first she teased me a bit, but now she's used to it, and she kinda likes it. She especially likes playing with it when I've got about three days' growth on it, and I'm like 'Commander Velcro-Head'!

I shave every other day. I'm too lazy to do it every day. Heck, I'm too lazy to do it every other day, either, but I'm still afraid to grow it back. Just like when I wore my hair long (grew it down to my butt, a la Crystal Gayle), it's the in-between phase I hate. I love it shaved, I love it long, but I hate it every other way. Too much effort to make m'self look human. Long hair is definitely the easiest I've ever had. Cheapest, too! Wash it every other day and use a decent conditioner, dry it, toss it in a pony-tail, and you're done. I used to drive my short-haired girlfriends crazy. We'd be getting ready to go out, and I'd get done and be waiting, while they'd still be futzing. The standard taunt was, "But you have so much less hair to worry about!!" :p

Zenghost, if you feel good without hair, then you should just go with the feeling.

The hair will always grow back if and when you change your mind. Yul Brynner shaved bald after the success of the movie The King and I, and he never looked back till the day he died.

Zen, I like a brave man that does not care what others think. Good for you!
As for the hat, simply staple your favorite hat on in the AM. When you remove the staples in the PM, it will look like you have been snakebit (kewl look for the islands)
As for NGK...trust me, it is not just his head that is ugly.

Don't walk next to crowded highways on sunny days. The glare might cause accidents. :) :D

It certainly feels strange for a while.

After it tans up a little it will look more natural.

Just soap when doing the rest of you is fine. I use a Braun electric everyday, and sometimes a razor and shave gell if I let it go for a few days. It's different looking at yourself in the mirror with shave cream all over your face and head. Use a mirror to look behind you when using a razor.

Razor burn on your face is irritating, but razor burn on your head burns when you sweat.

Something interesting that I noticed is that I bump my head more often.

Good luck with your new look.

I just noticed this morning that with the little stubble that grew overnight, my head is like velcro when I'm trying to put a shirt on. It just got stuck on my head and I had to peel it off--kinda funny.

I feel the same way--those in-between stages are such a pain in the ass. I used to have fairly long hair in high school and I cut it all off just to change things up a bit. Big mistake--every time I tried to grow it back I just got irritated with the in-between stage and cut it off again. With this "haircut" I love just waking up in the morning and not having to worry about doing anything to my hair.

That was just hilarious, Mike :D --I was laughing out loud when I read that (Sorry, Tom :p ;) ) .

I caught a glare in my reflection this morning and was thinking the same thing :p .

Post a picture!!
I thought about it, but after that "why you shouldn't put your picture up on the internet" thread, I decided against it ;) . Besides, the last thing I need is one of you bastids photoshopping a dress on me :barf: :D ;)

I've been using a Mach III (same one I use for my face)--I may have to invest in an electric. I've never used and electric, though--that'll be a new experience. The hardest part was getting in behind the ears.
