Dirk said he had the winners for his contest, but his PC caught a virus. Hopefully he'll get it fixed. Otherwise, he'll have to pick the winners again unless he remembers them. Just letting everyone know.

I'd wondered what happened there.

I find AVAST! gives excellent pc protection (even the free version).

I like Microsoft Security Essentials along with the native firewall. Simple, unobtrusive and works as well. Avast is great too.

damn, you can never be too careful online. Ive had my computor crash when I was a teen (I bet everone knows why :D) but none the less it sucks and I learned my lesson. Thats why I never go on any untrusted website.

Good luck Dirk. hope everything works out.

I'm pretty fond of Avast! as well. Good stuff for free antivirus. Actually, I like it better than paid Symantec.

The problem is almost corrected. Since I am not that computer savvy it is taking me longer working through the problem. The guy that usually takes care of my stuff is having to help me over the phone. It is basically coming down to just starting over and reinstalling everything. Once I am comfortable the back up files are ok. I will get the win, place and show posted for the contest. I am fairly sure what I remember is correct but, when you aren't drinking as much as you used to your memory starts to go.

Avast - that's what my buddy suggested. He also wanted to know why it wasn't on there to begin with. I don't know, because I'm stupid?!?!?!?

I actually run with at least 3 programs--Avast, MalwareBytes, and Spybot S&D. Between those I have pretty good general heuristic protection against most things. Viruses (and the people that make them) suck. Good luck getting it all sorted.

I'll second Spybot.

Avast! is a definite. Because it's free it's a no brainer (there's little benefit to be had from the paid edition).

Equally wonderful for both privacy and protection are the browser ad ons (and I use Firefox) Adblock and Ghostery. With the latter you know who's tracking you and you can prevent them from doing so. At the moment every site feels it's entitled to our personal information and to beam 10,000 ads at us.

Sorry to hear about the virus. I once lost 150+ typed pages due to a similar issue and now I back everything up obsessively.

YEEHA! It seems I finally managed to get it fixed. Well, I just re-installed everything.

I will be getting the winners names to Hark tomorrow.

Glad to hear it's better. There are several of us who are reasonably competent with tech stuff if you need any suggestions for good antivirus stuff, besides the stuff we mentioned. Looking forward to the results, and maybe getting some more pics of the prize.

Oh I know. Normally I wouldn't ask, but I leave for basic on Monday morning and will be out of contact for at least 3 months, so just kinda curious :D

oh very nice. I can see the sense of urgency there.... Have fun.

Sorry for the delay. Hark has the results.

Thanks to everyone for a great contest. Some cool names and very insightful quotes!
