Keep the dodo?

I wish I had known about the dodo before it got discontinued. None of the knife stores, including the infamous House of Blades, carried them. I bought one when I found out they were being discontinued just because I figured it was my last chance for a NIB. If Spyderco had made some of those display dodos (maybe they did, for all I know) and put them in knife stores, I'd have figured out how great the dodo was a long time ago. You know, like the Kershaw Speed safe demos.

In any case, it's my main EDC right now and I don't want to abuse it because my supply is pretty dang limited at this point.

I don't want to see it go.

I noticed you lived in Ft. Worth, where are the good knife shops here? I only know of Cheaper than Dirt with thier limted selection of BM and Spydercos.
And I also ordered a blue PE Dodo fearing that it will be my last chance to try a new one out (atleast without paying elevated prices). The lady at KnifeCenter told me I am getting thier last one in that configuration.

Well, drive to Arlington to the Parks Mall...it has a store on the second story (on the other side of the food court) called the Knife Shoppe which has a nice owner and a decent selection. Sometimes you get a decent price there, most of the time it's very expensive.

But yet more expensive is House of Blades, probably be the biggest knife store in Texas. It's a bit of a drive....I'd google map House of Blades and in fort worth or texas and it gets me my maps. But it's like almost 30 minutes from the university. I can look up directions later if you can't get it on google maps.

House of blades is pretty massive. It's the closest thing to a knife werehouse I can think of.

Mostly I NGK it.

Thanks for the info, I need to check out those shops. I will probally go to House of Blades to handle everything, then just come home and NGK it aslo:o
I am pumped about my Dodo arriving on Monday, I have been helping with remoldeling and think that the hooked blade will be perfect for cutting carpet from against the wall. Its funny how the most talked up and sought after Spydies are the discontinued ones.

Bring back a similar knife but with a more conventional blade shape like thay did with the Spot/Swick. I would also go with a different steel to bring down the cost of the knife.

Well, I'm open to different versions and different steels, but the reverse s hawkbill is a very useful blade shape once you get used to it. I need to see it available still too.

Give the DODO a 1/2 inch longer blade and choice of colored handles (Primarily, purple...or violet, blue , black, green, even red...or, mix the colors...black and purple and a slightly longer blade???? I'm in! The Dodo could have been the quintessential gentleman's "tac" folder, IMHO) and it would be much more popular. Next to the SPOT (which has already been ressurected in the AWESOME "SWICK"), the DODO had so much potential! The only reason I didn't buy one was that the blade was a bit wee for me. Just my opinion.

Well, again, I'd love to see different versions, but I'd like a chance to replace mine in its current form down the road. I don't have the money to just go out and buy three now. Basically, I just don't want to see it go away. But it was actually called the Dodo...it's almost a self fulfilling prophecy.

I actually prefer the SPOT to the SWICK.

Nor do I. I'd like a resurrection of it in some form or another, when the time is right.

Perhaps a small fixed blade, maybe 3" blade;) Just a thought.

I don't mind seeing the Dodo go. I have a Dodo and it doesn't get used much. I feel it was a bit over priced and over rated.

I agree but also think a more conventional blade like a wharncliff or sheepsfoot is even more versitile without the learning curve and they are also easier to sharpen. S30V and an odd curvey blade shape was too much for me. Even after taking it to a reputable knife shop for sharpening it was never quite as sharp as NIB.

The Dodo was a big gamble by Spyderco. It had G-10 scales which are generally more expensive than most FRN, aluminum, or stainless steel handled knives. It had a controversial lock and blade steel. It had an overall odd shape (blade and handle) that could have gone either way as far as consumer aesthetics.

I applaud Spyderco's efforts to be different and take chances but I think if Spyderco brings back a knife of similar proportions with an FRN handle, lockback, VG-10 wharncliff blade they could have an affordable winner.

I'm sure that'd be a great knife also, but a dodo it is not.

I wouldn't change a thing about mine. If it weren't so perfect, I wouldn't care that it was dying.

The reverse curve hawkbill esque blade is unique and specialized, but for what I'm using knives for, it works fantastic. I love just sinking that tip and pulling back to open things or cut through frabic.

And when I'm slicing, I just put what I'm going to cut right behind the tip and push through and let the recurve eat it.

Really, I was blown away by the brilliance of my para, but I think the dodo is even more advanced a tool than it.

Okay, enough of my trying to convince everyone. Nothing I can do about this except hopefully buy another to hold onto.

Yeah, the Dodo is a user's knife. And, you gotta use it to appreciate it.

If we're dreamin', how about a Dodo with S3V steel? Or M2 at HRC 64?

I would certainly buy those, but I'm not much of a steel snob. VG10, S30V, D2 or "even" 440C, I'm fine with. I guess what we might have a real hope for is a sprint run down the road. I see Calypso Jrs. for sale so often I have to remind myself they were discontinued. Of course, the Calypso has such broader appeal...

I've been wanting to give ZDP a shot...and ZDP's absolute fervor right now could maybe generate some interest....so let's get us a ZDP dodo run coming up and just show me where to sign.

Art, I'm already sold on the Dodo. I have been EDC'ing mine for the past six weeks or so and don't know why it ever got dropped. The small size is very deceptive as this is a really great cutter. Mine opens really quickly with a snap of the wrist! Oh well, grab what you can get hold of, this was one fine piece of work.
