I got this from MSC and I am using it according to the instructions but having limited success with it. It is suppose to form a thin layer when applied to a heated blade and keep the H/T scale off, and then wash up with hot water.
It works a little but I am still getting quite a bit of pitting. I edge quench.
Is anybody else using this who is getting good results?
My real question is what am I doing wrong:rolleyes:

Dang Robert, I've been thinking about trying this stuff too, now I'm waiting to hear someone else chime in. I'd like to think it would work - ain't that always the way? :)

Dave

I got a can of the stuff last week but haven't tried it yet. The spec sheet on it says iron and boric acid. Any of you guys know the specs on PBC or Turco. Same stuff, different can? mw

I'm glad someone else is "testing" this one. I had thought about it, but someone turned me onto Borax. Haven't tried it yet, but will soon.--Dan

Mike, Turco is a different animal from the PBC. I used Turco for a while. One of the "magic" ingredients in PBC is boron. PBC is what I use now. The PBC is only effective up to 1600 degrees F., which is more than enough for the carbon steels I use. I'm told that the Turco can handle much higher heats. It's been so long since I used it, I can't remember.

Here's a blade at a 400 grit hand-rubbed finish prior to hardening. This seems to be a good finish for holding the compound.

Here's the blade while being sprinkled with the PBC compound. The blade has been brought to 580 degrees F. The compound melts over the blade and blocks out oxygen.

This is what the blade looks like after hardening. The compound is washed off with boiling water, then the blade is put in the oven for tempering. Look at the tang. It's easy to see where the PBC coating stopped.

I have a tutorial called Scale Prevention During Heat Treating on my web site if anyone is interested.

Robert, does the KeepBryte work in a similar fashion?

Terry,
KeepBryte is the same application, Heat to 450deg sprinkle at will.
You can also mix it with alcohol, make a slurry and brush the blade cold.
Dries fast, I haven't taken the time to compair the to method of application yet but will post it when I do.
I got it thru MSC.
