It was sometime about a year or so back when during some trading I was doing with Charlie C. (Waynorth to y'all) I happened to pick up a Case 6380 pattern whittler in delrin.

I was very impressed with this knife on a variety of levels. The size, at 3 7/8" inches was pocket friendly but still afforded plenty of knife for most any use. On top of that, I just loved the blade selection of the master clip blade along with a coping and small clip blade as secondary blades.

I liked the knife so much that I asked Charlie if he'd sell me a bone version to complement the delrin scaled knife that I had previously received. Charlie sent a beauty and I was in 6380 heaven. As a stockman fan it was only natural for me to gravitate toward the function and utility of this beautiful whittler.

It didn't take too long until I started thinking that the pattern would sure make a beautiful custom knife and the first maker that I thought of was Ken Erickson. Why Ken? Well, having gotten to know Ken pretty well over the past couple of years, I knew intuitively that he'd like the lines of the pattern and that he'd find building the knife a challenge that he'd be eager to take on.

When I mentioned it to Ken and sent him some pix he was hooked. Shortly afterward I sent him the delrin handled knife so that he could study it towards building the knife when he had the opportunity.

While this was going on I mentioned to my buddy Mike Robuck what I was up to and asked him if he liked the pattern. He was enthusiastic about it and I suggested to him that I'd ask Ken if he wouldn't mind building two of 'em for us. Not surprisingly, Ken graciously said he would do so and so the project was on its way.

Today, Mike and I each received our knives. Ken already had a set of bone put aside for my original knife but after bringing Mikey into the scheme I decided to opt for ivory and Mike chose the bone. Truth be told I'd be hard put to decide between 'em but the ivory knife makes a great mate for the ivory dogleg Ken made for me around the holidays.

Anyway, here's the specs:

Pattern: Case 6380 Whittler
Steel: CPM-154 @ 60 Rc
Scales: Pre-ban Elephant Ivory & Ken Erickson Jigged Bone
Length: 3 7/8" Closed
Weight: 2 5/8 ounces (ivory)

Mike and Ken will chime in with their own thoughts and impressions (and hopefully a few new images as well). I'll also ask Rick (1200S) to join in as he is the proud owner of the prototype Ken created in preparation for building our knives.

Want to add that Ken is not only an accomplished knifemaker but a true and valued friend. You'd be hard pressed to find someone better to work with (putting aside my obvious prejudices in this instance).

I hope you enjoy these images which only give a hint of what a fine pair of knives Ken has built and the high level of workmanship exhibited in each of his projects:

Gorgeous knives man. Is the white one the one Ken had the walk through on? The picture one? If so, that is very interesting. Gorgeous knives though, just so you know.

Thanks.

No, the prototype was built with ivory micarta scales and that is the knife used for the tutorial. Rick (1200S) owns that knife and I have sent him an email to ask him to participate in this thread.

Ken finished these right before the Blade Show but held off sending them until Mike and I could catch our breath after the show.

That matched set is just beautiful. You and Mike must be ecstatic. Be careful, I don't think you can fit any more knives in your pocket? So you gonna put this beauty to use?

I've already worked the edges some so I told Ken I "can't" send it back. :p

You're worse than I am. I give it at least 24 hours before I put blade to stone...

awesome...both of them. thanks for the in-hand pics.

As a relative new maker of slipjoints I wanted to add a few comments. Thank you Elliott for having the faith in my skills and insight to ask me to make these. I feel like I am the real winner as I learned so much from building these whittlers. Thanks Mike and Rick for your sharing in this project. I have said it before and I will again, building a pattern like this reminds me of how much respect I have for the early cutlers and our current group of master slipjoint builders.

Here are a few more pictures. Hope you enjoy! I know I did making these knives.

Very well done Ken. Your attention to detail is excellent.

Those came out looking very spectacular....

I may be biased , but I favor your work above all others.

Wow - nice. I think before I jump on a whittler, I'll try that Case 6380. (Can't have too many Case's. :D )

You know, it ain't nice to brag & not share. Send 'em on over for some quality time here in Concord. I'll send 'em back. Really. Promise. (Fingers crossed behind my back . . . ;) )

That walkthrough was amazing; seeing Ken's finished products after all the effort that goes into them is great. I don't think I've seen a knife of his yet that I haven't liked.

thx - cpr

What a superb nexus of creativity, faith, steel, organicity, and heart.

Great looking knives men!
I love the blade selection, and the serpentine frame. The size is perfect too. That jigged bone with the oval shield really does it for me.:p
You should be proud of that pair Ken!

The 6380 is my favorite old Case, and my favorite Whittler. Good heft, and a nice choice of blades for different types of cuts. Complicated and tough to make, I think the apprentice had to sweep floors for two years before he could even look at one in the old days!:p
Ken, you did those babies right proud! And they couldn't "happen" to a nicer couple of guys!!
Nice going all around!
