Hi All,
I am interested in BOTH of these, but I HATE aluminum handles. So, I see on some websites that some are selling G10 models. How do I know what I am getting when I buy?

I guess the most simple and perhaps obvious thing to do, is email whomever you plan to buy from and simply ask them if the handle material on that model is indeed g10 or aluminum, and you ask because of your preference for g10 only :p

Good idea, but I was thinking that a shop/ supplier would have both and really wouldn't know unless they opened boxes and a lot of places don't like doing that.

You have your point. I suppose in that case you would just need to tell them how interested you are in purchasing and 2. if anyone can chime in [or you may try emailing kershaw's customer service], and ask them if there was/is a different UPC number on the box between the first run, g10 knives vs the UPC of the newest production, aluminum variants. And this way when you call you can ask them what UPC /item code/item number it has on there and match it with the aforementioned info. And this way they wouldn't need to open the box.

When did they start making these in aluminum? I thought after the prototypes they were all going to be in g-10?

I called yesterday and there is a "Kershaw store" that has G-10 models in stock.

Give them a call.

Yeah, im pretty sure the production models of these two knives are all G10. i bought a Piston last week and it was a G10

Guys - The new Knockouts (1870) will have aluminum handles. All Pistons (1860) have G-10 handles and a nested liner lock.

If you want a Knockout with the G-10 handles, your safest bet would be to buy one used or call the store. Some companies may be slow to update their websites, and you could very well end up with an Aluminum one. By the way,, I'm not one to tell people what they should like, but the new Aluminum ones are really nice. You might be surprised if you handle one.

Jimmer, can you confirm if the Knockout can be properly deassisted and function as a manual flipper? There have been mixed reports over the existence of a proper detent setup.

I've taken the KO apart. It does not have the proper detent setup necessary to act as a proper manual folder. Unless mine was simply manufactured incorrectly there is not a detent notch on the blade itself. I hope this answered your question :)

That is what I've heard but I'm not sure if it was just you or others have confirmed it. There is a detent ball but no notch in the blade right?

Correct. The ball is there, but no notch is present. I was bummed... Still a great feeling knife. If you like AO at all, it's one of their better offerings that I've personally handled in the Kershaw line up. I'd also recommend going for the aluminum too (it's textured well and doesn't feel like you'll lose grip even with wet hands). Stronger too :)

How strong is the lock on the piston? I am not speaking about the lockup, kershaw usually gets it right, but the liner, how strong is it?

Knockout hands down. Feels better in the hand, I like the blade design a little better, aluminum construction, I like flipper angle and thumb studs better, like the lock better. Just my opinion but without the full liner on the Piston it just feels "cheap" in my hand. Nice knife but that's just the feeling it gives me. The SpeedSafe on the Piston also feels "lazy" when opening and before anyone asks, yes I've played with the pivot tension. Only thing I would probably change on the Knockout is either some more texture on the handle or somehow add Trac-Tac for better grip. Manipulating it with very dry hands gives me a sense of "slipperiness".

I really hate that they changed the Knockout to aluminum. I was so in love with that knife, & now, sorry, but no thanks. Aluminum has no traction, its slick. I've never held an aluminum handled knife that I would buy. I thought i had found a site that still had the g-10 version, but I was wrong. I hope theychangeitback, or make a sprint run in g-10 or something, the I will be happy to buy 2 or 3 Knockouts.
