ok guys so i want to get a kershaw knife for work (open boxes etc) but i would also prefer the knife to be useful in self defense ( hopefully will never need to use it as such) but a man can never be too safe.
ive narrowed down my choices to the following.

volt 2
tremor
skyline

i like a rather large blade, feel free to add your preferred knife to the list!

I've got a skyline and a tremor, Love the skyline, I'm going to say skyline, the tremor is larger.

im seeing the love for the skyline, but i did say that i like a rather larger blade, so is the tremor too big ?

Under 40 and proficient at cutting cardboard and self defense? Plan on getting attacked by the cardboard chupa cabra!? Just kidding I would imagine you would want something in the 3.5 " range then (that's what i would want anyway). You have a few good choices between what you said and a couple others. If you have not already, check out kershawguy.com. you might be able to get a blem of a more expensive model you might have thought out of your price range. Blems if you do not know are usually small minor defects cosmetic or slightly off blade grind type of deal, that is 20% or so cheaper than a new one. No warranty but you can still get it sharpened for free. Only thing I can come up with is the Clash, around $25 and big enough for self defense and whatever you throw at it

If you are not trained to use a knife for self defense, I don't reccomend introducing one into a self defense situation. With that said, the Skyline. Great EDC and USA made.

too big? depends on you, I edc a ZT561 and 301 regularly so the tremor is a nice size IMO, the skyline is smaller than what I'm used to but flipping the thing is way addicting. :p

another note to the difference between the two, the tremor is assisted. I'm going to back up what bad_juju said about www.kershawguy.com being a good source, the blems are a really good value.

What about the Kershaw Zing tanto?

Blem Blur from kershawguy is under $40.

I also recommend my favorite sub-$40 Kershaw, the Needs Work.

well i wouldn't say self defense "trained" but i have use my edc knife in that situation, which wan't effective l because the blade was too small. i just feel like the skyline is rather small. which is why i lean towards the tremor.

You used a knife in a self defense situation where the difference of less than an inch of blade reach was an issue? Interesting. Then by all means, don't mess around. Go big or go home

Of those choices, I'd take the Volt II for the purposes you mentioned. The Tremor is bulky and heavy enough that you might leave it home sometimes, and the curved handle limits useful grip positions. The skyline is wonderful for EDC slicing tasks, but I prefer a slightly fatter, rounder grip(like that of the volt II) for heavy cutting tasks. The Volt II has a slightly stronger tip and slightly nicer choil/guard shape as well(compared to the Skyline.)

That being said, all three knives are excellent for what they are. I'm sure you'd be happy with the one you choose, as long as you can comfortably carry it every day.

well i ended up going with the tremor! it should get here tommorrow and i am super excited!
