Khukri vs. Hatchet/axe?

Since it's winter, and cuz I can, I've been speculating on the relative advantages of either the khukri or a decent hatchet for a week backpacking in the Northwoods once Spring arrives..
I won't be (deliberately) building a winter cabin, but would appreciate the viewpoints and insights of the folks in the forum.
Also, if the points of view for the khukri are convincing, I get to talk myself into another toy.
Thanks

Cliff Stamp recently did a comparison of a Gransfors Wildlife Hatchet and HI Khukuri. I think the Khuk was a little longer and heavier than the hatchet, but there's a lot of good information in the report. You should be able to retrieve it with the search function.

Both, if of quality, are excellent general woodworking tools. Both also have advantages and disadvantages over the other. If you have the time (and money) , it is always valuable to get experience with different tools and see first hand its strengths and weaknesses.

I have both quality khukuris (HI) and axes (Gransfors Bruks) and I have used both extensively on woody brush, and full sized wood. Some specific comments can be seen here :

The khukuri in the above is one of the heaviest and most axe-like models. There are many other versions, the extreme of which are very slim and machete-like.

Mr. Stamp,
I've visited this site quite a bit. It is my considered opinion that you should be designated a National Treasure, and fully funded by a special act of Congress.
Thank you for your response to my question, and for the application of your insight and effort to edged tools. A treat to read your work.

Thanks, if you are looking for a khukuri. Then Bill Martino offers the best deals currently. He often has blades for sale with insignificant problems (cosmetic issues) and they are discounted significantly over the already low prices.

Both have their merits but I think that a hatchet would be better in the north woods. A kukri is better suited, I believe, to lighter brush and machete type use.
