Lalit emailed me this list of Nepali names for the various parts of a khukuri. I thought you all would be interested:

Fulo: The diamond shaped washer.
Chhapri: Brass buttcap
Kajo: The brass handle fitting (ferrule)
Kothi: The brass scabbard fitting.
Dap: The scabbard itself.
Faras: The frog.

Interesting! And from the horse's mouth.

Craig,
Very interesting. So if the word for the chape (the pointy metal covering for the bottom of the scabbard) is kothi, I'm assuming that's part of the root of kothimora, which has a highly decorated and enlarged chape as an integral part of its design. Maybe you could ask Lalit?

Well, we should ask him what "mora" means since it's almost certain that the "kothi" in kothimora refers to the same thing. Good thinking, Berk!

Sitting around the campfire, I noticed that the chhapri was a little tarnished, so I buffed it with a clean cloth. The fulo was little more difficult - because of the tang -but kajo was easy to shine.

Everything looked great, but the next day I had to ford a river. I got to the other side to discover the kothi was loose on the dap. Luckily, the faras was reliable and
the dap hadn't left my belt. Congratualte the kamis for making such a great faras to keep the dap where it should be.

Can you imagine the inquiries from any freshmen...

Much easier to write Dap instead of scabbard, don't you think.

Thanks Craig!
