I bought my father a knife as a gift. He works on a farm and needs a good using knife. I have bought him several. I have, up until now, bought him folders. I came across a Boker 516 at my local distributor. I paid $20 for it. It uses 440C and has decent ergonomics. I thought it would be a great work knife that he could use and abuse. I gave it to him today. The first thing he says is, "I can't use that....it's too nice to use". What is up with that?

I'd think that the's just being a bit silly. $20 buck knife is too nice to use? That doesn't make sense to me...

Maybe "it's to nice to use" is a euphemism.

Maybe what he's really saying is "That thing is going straight to the darkest corner of my sock drawer because I wouldn't be caught dead with a knife like that. Why don't you buy me a Benchmade?"

Just a thought :D

I have had people say the same thing to me when I give them a knife. I kind of got the idea that they were just more comfortable with whatever they were carrying and were just being polite to me.

DO like we do in my family

Dad: wow this is a nice knife its to nice to use
Ren: No its not! I bought it for you to use, so use it.
Dad: Don't talk that way to me young man I dont like your tone
Ren: Dad have you forgotten your meds? Im not a young man im 38
Dad: well Im not using it its too nice
Ren: Dad is a phucking gift and if you dont use it Im gonna bitch slap you with it and shove it up your ass.
Dad: Oh well now that you put it that way... I guess mom could maybe use a knife around the kitchen Right Honey?
Ren: DAD ARRRRHHHHGGGGG YOU CRUSTY OLD PEE STAINED BASTARD. TAKE THE FRIGGEN KNIFE ON UP THE HILL AND BALE SOME DAM BARBED WIRE RIGHT NOW BEFORE ITS PERMANANTLY STORED IN YOUR COLON.!!!!

:p

I think in his case it has a lot to do with the fact that he knows nothing about knives. Of course he didn't know that I only paid $20 for it. It is kind of like the guys at work that laugh at me when they found out I paid $100 for a duty knife as they whip out their Spyderco knock-off and proclaim, "I got this one for $5".

Today, I bought my father-in-law a Case Yellow Handle Trapper. I'm not much for those kinds of knives, prefer tactical folders, but this knife was SWEET. Now I bought it for him, with the intent that he'd use it for work. But, he thought that it was too nice to use. He'd rather use his $20 Schrade. :(

shootist16, I know what you mean.

Maybe I should ask for the knife back, to add to my collection.....

Maybe he just doesn't like it. I bought my grandfather a few nice slipjoints (all $50-70, IIRC), and they always ended up in his drawer. Finally I asked him why. Why? "Those other knives are too big...I just need x and x".
Went and bought him a nice one in the size/with the blades he likes, and he's carried it ever since.
Maybe I should ask for that limited edition Case canoe (that I liked so much) back. And maybe I should have asked what kind of knife he'd use a little sooner:o

I bought my brother in law a nice BM AFCK to carry on his belt when he was on the job,(he was a LEO)cuz he said he liked mine, in the last six years before he retired he never carried it once, yet he always had that big bulky Buck 110 with him when he was working. After he retired a couple a years ago I had asked him why he never carried it, considerin' he liked mine so much, at which point he told me all his freinds carried Bucks on the job and he would have felt like the odd man out with the BM, then he added that after 25 years on the job, when your knife becomes your last ditch back-up, and you've trained with a paticular knife over and over again, you don't mess with recipe when your, or someone elses life may depend on it.

Now when we go to VT to visit I see he has it clipped to his pocket, along with his trusty Buck on his belt, and when ever he instictively reaches for a knife it's always the Buck.

I'll probably wind up with somewhere down the line, but hey that's ok it'll just be another addition to my EDC rotation. :D
