Have you guys travel with either fix blade or folder in check in luggage? Did you have any problem at your destination airport? Did anyone have any problem in asia ?

Domestically, in the US, knives in checked baggage are no problem at all.

Internationally, it will vary by country.

when travelling by plane across Europe it does not cause any problems, I always have knife or two in my check in luggage.

watch out, some countries are less friendly than others. I've had trouble conveying a Fallkniven F1 through Spain when I went montaineering in Morocco. It was buried in the bottom of my backpack and still I had to get it out and it was nearly confiscated. I argued for so long with the police, that a nice police officer was eventually called and told the others to give it back to me. From then on, every time luggage was checked I had to argue, but since the knife had been left to me once I had a good argument. And I was travelling by train, not by plane... they X-ray luggage even in train stations, over there, and it was before the 2004 attempts.

Cheers,

Mathias

In Fr & Ge you cannot carry a 1 1/2' SAK in the passenger cabin, but I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble when carrying a big fixed blade in the check-in luggage.

I have not had any problems in Europe or South America before or since 9/11. Especially South America, I once went through a metal detector in northwestern Brazil with my Severtech, the police officer shrugged and waved me on. In Sao Paulo or Rio it would have been a different story.

I have just returned to the UK from a trip to the Hindu Kush and Himalaya regions of Pakistan (Wow, what a trip!) and had no difficulty at airports either end with my knives stowed in my check-in back-pack. The biggest blade in there was my Buck/Strider 880SP, with my Swisstool alongside it along with a natty little locally made folder I picked up in Dir as a momento.

My son had one removed from his luggage somewhere between Illinois and Afghanistan, a folder. They didn't touch his multi-tool. Left a note inside stating that it was removed and by whom?

Moving to Knife Laws ...

In April I carried a box of several dozen folders and fixed blade knives to my son in Germany to be handed out to his soldiers. I checked them in with all my other stuff in the suitcase. I didn't make any noise about them (don't hang yourself) and they went through US and German customs without any comment. I don't think I was being sneaky since there was nothing dangerous to declare and they were being taken into the country as a gift.

I would check the laws in the foreign country first. I don't really plan on travelling anyways so US is good for me.

London is no good, they confiscated my Buck Crosslock. When I went to South Korea (pre-9/11) I had no problem getting knives in checked or carry-on, but the tour guide advised me Very Strongly not to carry it.
