Knife "needs a new bail". What does that mean?

The description of a knife for sale said that the knife is in good shape except that it "needs a new bail". Could someone please explain what the "bail" is, how much it would cost to get replaced, and where one would go to get this kind of work done. Thank you for taking the time to answer my newbie questions.

p.s. A web search on "knife" and "bail" was an eye opening experience .

Hi,

A bail is a loop of metal wire that a lanyard is attached to(think Boy Scout knife). You could probably return it to the maker, and have it fixed for free. There not hard to make either:).

HTH:D:).

Thank you for that clear explaination. The subject item *is* a Boy Scout knife and I now know that it requires a very minor repair.

Rev,
You could of asked me directly, I would told you. I am running auction for a member of our forums.

You are absolutely right, I should have just asked you. That was rude of me and I am sorry.

thank you, I do understand why you asked elsewhere sometimes you cannot trust what a ebay seller says as I've learned on a few occasions

I don't think that was rude, Rev Pete. It was an honest question about a knife feature, and you didn't question the seller's veracity or integrity, or even even point us to the auction.
I have had questions about features of auction items without being at all interested in buying the items (so I didn't bother the seller). Posting your question here was educational for you and for others who read this forum. And you even made the effort to do an internet search first. You did fine here.

I never thought it rude, I just was letting REV know I would have more than happy to have answered any questions. however I do believe that a question about intergrity and absolute honesty was a little part of why it was asked here instead. And that isn't a bad thing either

Rev. Pete
I think that any question that increases your understanding of the subject is appropriate - the subject was - what is a 'bail' and something about where to get it repaired - I've purchased Remington BSA's at gun shows with missing bails - this makes the value more like $50.00 rather than $125.00 There was a gentleman in Tacoma Washington - a Mel Bewster who repaired Remingtons - and I'm sure that there are others... just be aware that the missing bail lowers the value.

first of all if I hadn't have been a member of this forum I wouldn't have become aware of what is second knowledge to me, is not to some people and was able to revise my auction. I think asking questions and seeking knowledge is great, but if a seller doesn't know that there's a question about an item then how are the to revise it accordingly. You are not correct the values doesn't decrease in such radical amounts.

Then again if I wasn't a member this auction would never be running as I've donated the two knives from my own collection and the ending amount will be given to our friend Yiterp and his family
