Hello,

I'm new to the whole knife throwing scene, and had recently lost a few of my throwing knives.

I'm looking to moderately upgrade and was looking at a company called J & L Direct Link to JL Direct (Throwing Knives, section.)

Right now, I currently have;

[Same style, atleast]

So, I was wondering if I should upgrade to a larger knife or not? Or if anyone had any recommendations?

There's nothing in that picture to indicate size, but most people tend to agree that when throwing, bigger is better. The larger the knife, the easier it is to control and get it to stick. But if that size works for you, why change it?

5 inch long? Big NO if you ask me...

Mine is 8 3/4" and i believe everyone else will recommend bigger and heavier knives... You'll get more consistency, better "feel", and improve faster when you go long and heavy..

I recommend cold steel knives (haven't tried those but everyone seems to recommend it) and the one i am using from united cutlery

Link is broken but it looks nice.... 8 Inch should be just alright. Did they state that its well balanced?

Yes. I actually asked that with my prior experinces with throwing knives and a few articles I read.

Btw, fixed the link.

Those knives go for a good price . Does anyone know if they are good steel ?
ould the blades hold an edge good enough for camp chores ?

no indication of steel type... I guess it should be the common 420 stainless steel, rarely 440steel. Well, you got 2 pieces, if one blunts out, you got a spare :D

I would also go for these type of knives because of the sheath.

I like the ones that look between a skinner or a patch knife . A slightly curved blade with a bit of a belly . Do you think that 420 will sharpen well and hold a good edge ?

6 inches proabably means they are a bit light for my taste . If they keep a good edge they might make a neck knife .

Absolutely not:) Do a search on 420 steel or check one of the steel facts nd you will understand why i'm so blunt about it.

is there no difference between 420 an 420 J2 ? They are even using this on some of their better knives . I know you most often get what you pay fpr .

I,m going to go to a trad archery rendesvous . These would be good trade knives .

Apparently 420 j2 isn,t much different than 420 . Its supposedly too soft for regular knife blades . I don,t know how well it works for a thrower which may be able to use a softer metal . Has anyone got any throwers using this metal ?

Thanks Atomspere . That is quite the shoulder harness they came with . So you had no issues with the points bending ?

i didn't have issues with it bending(i threw that set in the woods and lost all 3 of it). But it depends on its thickness too. I think 420 series are generally the same and different variant of it wouldn't make much of a difference.
