Knifemakers as collectors?

I was just admiring Ken Onions, David Broadwell knife, and I started wondering.

How many knifemakers are also collectors?

I know Dave Ellis has an extensive collection, but who else not only makes knives, but is also a KnifeNut?

I started out as a collector. At one time I had the largest George Herron collection in the world. I sold most of the interesting pieces to build a house so that I would not have any payments. I still collect Spyderco's
(I have about 125 of them), Walter Brend,Speed Tech,Tom Maringer (Vorpals) Chris Reeve (Sebenzas), Throwing Knives (About 300 of these) and deceased makers (just starting this collection)
I also like to collect knives from friends that I meet in the knife industry and at shows. These are real special.

Yup! We have managed to aquire a few knives, Barry Gallagher, Wade Colter, Rick Dunkerly, Michael Roberts, a late 50's model 3-6 Randall, Wendel Fox, several old Marbles, Western, Camillus, several old Buck 110 folding hunters (enjoying a well deserved retirement) still working on a few trades with a other makers, our collection is making slow but steady progress!! It's a horrible addiction!!! but somebody has to have it!!! Mike & Audra

I have no rhyme or reason on what I buy. I respect Mike Connor so I have one of his Bowies cause that is what he does so well. One of my heros is Clyde Fischer. I have a couple of his folders. Clyde continues to make knives even with the use of one hand. Lot of drive in that old goat. Some other modern makers that I like. Some stock removal guys work as well but mostly forged pieces.
I try to pick up interesting pieces usually 17th and 18th century pieces whenever I get enough nickels rolled up.

Hey all,
I've been collecting customs as long as I've been making knives.I buy from other makers I meet and become friends with at show and from makers I truly admire (which are a WHOLE lot so I'm gonna have a large collection

Good question!
At this point with my knifemaking, It's hard to justify purchasing custom knives. I still have lots of work to do as far as building my shop and several more pieces of equipment to build or buy. I don't think my shop will EVER be complete but once I run out of room, that will be it

Sometimes it's hard to resist and I will give in to my knife NUT urges and buy a knife though!!

I like this thread too much to not bring it BTTT one more time. There are some great makers that have posted, but I know we haven't even scratched the surface with all the makers that pass through here. I really don't have a better question to get some insight as to what makers like and look for in others work.

yep count me in! i love knives period! i have some Steve Hoels, a great Osborne engraved by Alfano and have some more pieces on order.
so many cool knives out there, wish i could win a lottery

I know of several makers who got their start collecting. I think many realize at some point they just can't buy all the ones they want. Then they decide they well just make them.

Frankly I prefer to buy knives from makers/collectors.

I collected knives when I was younger, but lost interest (still don't remember why). I always wanted an Ogg folder, but could never afford one.

Then, my mother married Mr. Ogg and he gave me one for a birthday. Wow, that got me started all over again. I quit a career in the Air Force and moved to Paris, Arkansas to learn to make knives. I did learn, then Mr. Ogg passed away and I inherited his knife collection.

He was a Guild member in it's founding year, and used to trade with other makers. His favorite time to collect/trade was at shows. He built up quite a collection including many of his own. One of his knives was collected by the Smithsonian Institute Museum of American History recently.

I'm a maker and I collect. What maker isn't a knife nut?
