I would like to try my hand at knifemaking. Any suggestion on resource like web sites, books, etc that you could suggest. I know this is vague but it is hard to know where to start.

I hope this is the right place to ask, if not tell me and I will delete the post.

Thanks

custom knife making by tim Mc creight is the book i started with, wayne goddard has a couple out. how to make knives by bob loveless is a must read too. and read every post in the shop talk forum.

Have you been drawing knives? That's a good place to start. If you have Photoshop check out PhilL's tutorial at the top of the forum. And welcome, you'll find a treasure of help here.

Where are you located??? There are a number of good books out. You should look to see if you have any assocations for knifemakers in your area and/or kinfemakers themselfs. I have one dude (Jerry) that just started learning with me. He started by making up a billet of cable damascus.

Wow, thank you all for the info. I am looking forward to being able to show you my progress and hopefully start interacting with you all over here.

Thanks again.

This is where you want to be. This is were I have gotten and continue to get the best and wanting help on knife making.

When I started, very shortly ago, I was directed to this forum. Stay with these guys and yourself. Be sure you want to do it and don't let set backs discourage you. Listen well to these many willing experts that have made many knives. Be sure in yourself and carry on especially when hours have been lost to a small but costly mistake. You too will make pretty knives that last in edge and looks.

Probably more than you need, but we don't know how much that is yet, do we? Good hunting and luck. Feel free to ask the participants here anything. If it is a stupid question, they will tell you in the nicest possible way. LOL. Terry

Thanks again for the help. My 70 year old dad was a metal worker. He is from France, he immigrated to Canada in 54, and has a lot of knowledge that he would like to pass on to me. I could not learn this anywhere else and I like spending time with my dad. We don’t take the time anymore to learn from our elders.

I started doing this while working on armor but knifemaking would complement this since he knows a lot about heat treating the different metals. Just thought I'd give you a little background.Sorry for the rambling. ;)
