I'm a relative newcomer, own a SS Police PE and a plain SPOT. I just ordered a D4 and a Kopa Cocobolo, which should arrive at my door on Thursday (yeah! :D ). I'm a lightweight when it comes to how I use my knives -- household stuff mainly -- so I think the Kopa is a good choice for my EDC. It also looks beautiful, and should go well with the suits I'm forced to wear for work. However, I'm beginning to question whether I should have purchased the Mini Persian -- it too is a beautiful knife! Granted, the Mini Persian is a bit bigger than the Kopa, but beside the size issue, is there any argument as to which is the "better" knife? Don't stab me if this is a dumb question please!

It's amazing how much stuff I didn't know about knives before coming to this forum. You guys rock.

PS - I must have an Ocelot! (Just had to get that off my chest...) Can you tell I'm getting obsessed with Spydercos already? :)

Thanks

Both the 75mm Persian and the Kopa are great office friendly knives. I prefer the ergos of the Persian(even it is a little small for me) to those on the Kopa.

For office type cutting, the Kopa leaf blade is probably better suited, as it provides slightly better point control, unless you're familiar with cutting using upswept blades(it takes gettign used to).

Both are very attractive, and either one is going to get looks of jealousy.

On a separate note, the Ocelot is a wickedly awesome knife;) You need one...

75mm Persian gives you half and inch more of blade. The Kopa blade, by being under 2.5", is legal just about anywhere in the USA. The Kopa also gives you a full flat grind, which many prefer. The Persian carrys tip up, the Kopa tip down, purely a matter of taste as to which is better. Neither have provision for left hand clip mounting, but the Persian can be drilled for it, while the Kopa clip cannot be removed without leaving a depression in the bolster. The Kopa offers a variety of scale materials and the Cocobolo you ordered is, IMHO, one of the prettiest. The Persian comes in black micarta only.

I have both the Mini Persian and the KOPA, each in black micarta. If I was still in a "suit wearing world", I would carry the Kopa. It is more elegant and less intimidating. The only drawback that I can think of is that it is a little harder to open one handed. I simply open it like a slipjoint. The Spyderco Kiwi is another elegant gents knife.

Thanks for the feedback, smcfalls, deacon and tim! Much appreciated. My new dilemma is that maybe I should have gotten the D4 as a CE instead of a PE -- I don't have any serrated folders, but I think a serrated edge would come in handy around the house. Oh well, it's probably not the last knife I'll buy. I have about a dozen Spidies on my "wish list" already!

The Delica and Kopa should arrive tomorrow. I'll try to borrow my girlfriend's digital camera and takes some pics of my fledgling collection...

Wow, now that's a tough question... The Kopa is my all time favorite Spyderco folder, but the Persian 75mm is one hell of an EDC piece. Defiantly making it's way to the top for me. The guys above shot out the facts nicely, so all I can offer is my personal tastes. Use the Kopa, see how it "fits" and then get the Persian 75mm, IMO, you can't go wrong with either piece.

Good luck and enjoy!

A little taste of the Kopa. :)

Rock, what a gorgeous collection of Kopas you have! Glad to hear to positive feedback. The tiger corals are really eye-catching.

I think I want the Ocelot next, then the Persian 75mm.

To-date, I've gotten all my Spydercos (four in total) online. Where do you guys go to purchase them, in terms of a brick and mortar store? Are there big chain stores thay carry Spydercos? I checked several Wal-Marts by me (I know, I know, I was just looking!) but they do not stock them. I live in central NJ, and I don't think we have many knife shops around here. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks!

As for "big chains" select Walmarts carry the FRN S30V Native PE only. If you are looking for a selection, I would suggest clicking on the link below and selecting your closest city. It will bring up a list of dealers in your area.

Good luck!

thanks rock. unfortunately the closest retailer is about an hour and a half away from where i live (though i do go to that part of the state occassionally). i was wondering if any of the larger "sporting goods" stores carry spydies. so far, no luck.

Very slim pickings in this area Harry, not much to be had beyond an Endura or Delica, and even those at prices that make them unattractive. No sign of the Native in any of the Walmarts within a ten mile radius of my place either. With only a couple exceptions, mine have all internet deals of one kind or another. Most of my new ones come from New Graham Knives. I have bought quite a few out of production ones on eBay and a number on the Exchange forum here as well.

Deacon -- that's an amazing collection you have! I'm at work so I could only browse for a few minutes, but I will definitely be checking it out in more detail when I get home (after, of course, I open my new Delica & Kopa which, according to UPS, is "out for delivery" as we speak! :D ).

New Graham looks like a great site -- very competitive prices. I happened to buy these two knives at Grand Prarie Knives (pricing was a little better).

Thanks for the info!

Wow, what beautiful Kopas!! Great picture! Thanks for sharing! I buy my knives exclusively online. There are some excellent places, such as New Graham and Grand Prairie.

I'm in ecstacy -- the Kopa is the knife I've been searching for for years. Feels like I'll keep this knife close till the day I die. It's much more impressive in the hand than in the photos. Nice heft for it's size, which I think is perfect for what I need an every day knife to do. Zero blade play, a solid (yet sounding a bit higher-than-average in pitch) "SNAP" upon opening, and a reassuring "CLACK" upon closing. I find opening and closing easy with one hand, and fun. Love the low-riding skeleton clip. And the Cocobolo wood inlays are gorgeous. I've been handling it for a couple of hours straight, and it feels better by the minute.

The Delica is so light! Yet so solid -- the lock feels even tighter than the Kopa. My first tip-up carry (though I know it's reversable) and I'm excited by giving that a try.

I took a couple of very amateur photos of my mini-collection of 4 Spydies, but I don't think I can post them here. Must look into membership...
