I ordered this one off of the 1/18 specials before the picture even showed up. I like the Kumar Kardas. They're just a nice size and always look great. When the picture posted, I didn't think I would like it, as the hilt looked chunky and fat. But I had already committed, so I anxiously waited. When it came, I was pleasantly surprised. The antler is beautiful, and it fits my rather small hands perfectly. I guess HI products are like sex. The worst I ever had was wonderful.

I have been paying close attention to these as well. The one I wanted but missed was a Sher KK with rough stag handles, not smooth. I have also noticed that the new Sher KK's are fatter and deeper than the trad. Kumar KK, and in my case don't fit the scabbard quite as well. I suspect the Sarki is making the scabbards to fit the skinnier KK's and hasn't got all the bugs worked out as yet.

Very nice knives. But what is it with Sher not grinding the whole edge blade down? Kumar would grind all but the last 1/2 of blade, which was fine, but the last Sher I got had almost an inch and a quarter of unused blade hanging there right after the bolster. (?)

Regards,

Norm

I have an antler handled KK and it really is nice. The handle is a bit small, but nice. I have been trying to get an antlered JKM, but the sharks are always circling!

I'd really like an antler handled Sarge Knife or an antler handled kerambit, but you don't see those often.

Sher does nice work with handles and with blades. I have one of his chainpuris, and it has really good carving.
Some bladesmiths like an area that is not fully hardened near the guard - in this case near the handle - to add strength to the knife. One place where failures are most likely would be where the tang joins the rest of the blade.
Keeping the sharp area further up the blade makes sense, if you want a tough and strong blade.
I am sure that Pen can tell you more about this - I just have some minimal knowledge from reading about this stuff - bladesmiths know more.

Sorry
:D .. the last one was grabbed by Steve before I send my email .. I guess I have to take a break and have a good sleep (UBBB threads are posted at about 1:30 to 2:00am)!

i have a nice smooth bone kumar karda with convex edge and like it alot would love one with antler handle been eyeing them alot--gota get one  :)

I should have an antler KK heading my way now, in place of the Sarge I was waiting on... Great pics ferguson!

Hmm, Steve, unusual KK by Sher.

Enclosed is a pic of my USA antler family. :D

My KK (made by Kumar) fits my hand like it was made for me. It just *feels right*.

Next, the JKM. I am a JKM nutcase, having one in every flavor- purpleheart, horn, rath. chandan & USA antler. Notice the sheath is worn and missing the string- 'cause I carry it every day.

At bottom is my the Kqueen of my Khukuris- 14" BDC by Bura with USA antler.

How I wish I had the 10" BDC antler mate to it- snagged by someone in November for $95. Or the dee-lish antler M-43 that I also missed.:( Karma. I'm very lucky to have these 3!

Notice all 3 are greasy looking- Breakfree CLP in this case.

Nice family! Still trying for antler handled HI stuff. I have not seen many khuks with the antler handle. Its very nice.

One thing to remember is that the antler smells like, well, antler. My rhodesian ridgeback dragged my KK off the counter one day and was going to check the handle!

I got one of the antler-handled seaxes awhile back, the handles are unbelievable.

I've noticed that the recent JKM's appear to have less unused ricasso space between the sharpened edge and the handle. I see this as a good development if the overall length of the knife has not shrunk.

Great observation & very true. Older, Kesar-made JKM's can use a finger choil due to that. Newer, Kumar-made JKM's are sharp right down to the grip, practically. O/A length is the same, just have more sharp edge these days.

Ad Astra, JKM-aholic :(

Mr. Ferguson, I am jealous... :grumpy:

Seriously awesome snag...I want too!!!

Actually, I wonder if Kumar Kardas are made with the standard Nepali black horn that are on the JKMs...would be a beautiful finish methinks...

Back to drooling...

Received my antler KK today, looks great. You can see the slight angle between the handle and blade in Ad Astra's pic I believe, I was a little worried about that. Mine has the same angle, but the knife just feels very natural with it, no problem at all. This will be a definite user and will get a convex edge asap. Now I gotta get a JKM...
