Kydex Help...

I decided to try my hand at making up a couple of kydex sheaths - one for my Izula and one for a Benchmade/Snody Activator with the carbon fiber/black handle scales (probably my favorite EDC), so I bought a couple of kydex sheath kits as shown in the link below. I didn't really think it through properly, because I didn't even think about needing a tool to crimp the rivets with. Has anyone come up with a way to crimp the rivets without using the recommended tool? If not, I'll just have to bite the bullet and order it... just hoped to be able to do try this out this weekend.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!!

I've found the rivet tools at local hardware and farm supply stores. They may have them with the tarps and such for canvas snaps others may have them near the bulk rope or webbing, again, along with the rivet snaps. A hobby store may also be a good place to check.

Send me your addy. I've got an old pair of eyelet pliers I don't need that work well for the 1/4" KK eyelets.

Tandy leather has them.

Here

Tandy setters don't work with KK eyelets. Tandy eyelets have larger heads and the Tandy setters make an absolute mess of non-Tandy eyelets.

Those are for grommets not eyelets.

Got it... Will the snap setter split the eyeletts?
The one I have (bought it a while ago for a different project) looks like this:

I assumed the snaps I used and the eyelets used would be close enough that this would work as well. (I ask because I am also planning on doing a little kydex soon)

Maybe, maybe not. I've actually never seen a snap setter up close, so I'm not sure of how they deal with the edge. If they flare it like an eyelet, and it's the right size, they may be fine as far as splitting. That said, even my dies split 'em every now and then. I would imagine the anvil would deform the head though since it's not grooved to fit. Best to just give it a go and see. If the setter part works well, but the head deforms, try using a piece of thick leather in place of the anvil.

I appreciate it... I may give it a try when I do get ahold of some material to work with.

And I do think you were right with the grommet tool. They would be the ones found with the tarps and such. :foot:

Sorry for the threadjack, absoluteindian. :D

No worries at all, I don't consider it a thread jacking... This is good info, and useful to others besides myself, I'm sure. Thanks for the input guys, looks like Kiah is going to take care of me!!!

Kiah, as said in the PM I just sent you - Thank you very much for your generosity, it is very much appreciated! Know that I will certainly pay it forward at the first opportunity. Its guys like you that make this forum shine and continue to restore my faith in the generosity and caring of people - something I used to think was long gone. Thank you!!

I will be sure to post up my first sheath - who knows, I might even discover that I'm good at it!!
