Kydex Question

Part of the kydex sheath for my knife is rubbing up against the flat side of the blade, right above the edge and looks like it has made some sort of mark from this. It doesn't seem to be touching the tip of the edge though. My question is this, will this effect the sharpeness of the blade or will this not have any effect at all? I haven't sharpened this knife or used it and didn't plan on it, so I don't know if I should send it back to the maker to be repaired and possibly have him make a new sheath for it. Any ideas or comments will be appreciated...thanks!

often a kydex sheath will rub on some part of your knife but if its a user then its no big deal. if the kydex is pressing on the actual edge and damaging it just trim it back with a suitably sized blade its only quite soft plastic. if its a keeper then just keep it out of the sheath you can check on it make sure its not rusting etc easier if its not in the sheath too.

I wear this knife out only as a self-defense piece, so I want to keep it as sharp as possible. I usually have something else for all of my cutting needs. I'm not really sure if it's effecting the edge...it's doing it on the flat side. It looks like a scratch right above the very edge...

The only reason I'm concerned is because this is a custom knife and I don't want to see the money I spent on it go down the drain...

ahh i see

i would probably look at using a scalpel or needle file to take the lump of plastic out before it does any more damage. Ive done this before with good results. I just took the sharp edge off of a kydex sheath because it was damaging he micarta scales when you took the knife in and out. now its fine and it was the least hassel quickest solution IMHO

I don't know if I want to go tinkering with sheath...so you do think this is causing damage to the edge?

it should not cost too much to have another sheath made... either aftermarket, or by the original maker...

Hey Nick....

We talked about this over email..It seems I didn't actually answer the question you were asking...

It possibly can be dulling the edge of the knife....

However more than likely there is a small piece of crap, possibly a single grain of sand from the grinding process caught in the seam, that is causing the problems....

Give the sheath a good high pressure rinse from a garden hose or something..
It may clear it up,, it may not....

I know,, it's Very frustrating sometimes...

Hope that helps a little more....

What's up guys!? Eric, I think I actually figured it out...there are small chunks of kydex on the left side where the edge goes when you put it back in the sheath. Looks like it may be a defect because it's smooth on the other side. I actually think it is in fact dulling the edge. So I'm going to send it back to Bud to be worked on. Karen at Bud's told me he would either make a new sheath, repair the knife or even send me a new one. What sucks is...it's only dulling half way down the edge on the side where it is happening. On the other half of that edge, it has a perfect edge. Normally I wouldn't give a ****...but it's a custom and I think over time this could throw the bevel off.

Oh and BTW...I did what you said about the magnet and got nothing. Also, the 3M Dual-Lock is awesome...Thanks again for your help.
