Kydex Scuffing?

Ok, just because I'm an anal little bugger, I have to ask:

I'm considering a kydex sheath from Survival Sheath for my brand new baby Beretta 96. Will the Kydex scuff up the beautiful black finish on 'er?

I have kydex scuffs on my Strider BT, but they don't bother me because it came, uh, "Like new in box." :D

Thanks

Don't feel bad;) I'm the same way about my stuff.

I bought a Safariland Gun-Quick Shoulder rig for my Sig P220 based on it's minimal design. I didn't think about it not being lined, but I gave it a try anyway. After only 6 or so draws, I could already see wear on the edges of the slide out by the muzzle. Needless to say I was not pleased.

I returned it and got another Safariland Custom fit model 560 for another gun. I already had one for the 220. It's lined and I can hardly see any ill effects after numerous draws.

I think the form and function of Kydex is great, but I'd have a hard time running a classy gun (or my baby) in it.

I have two kydex sheaths from blade-tech (one for my Glock 19 the other for my Wilson CQB). Both are IWB carry and I've never had a hard time keeping scuffs away from either gun. As a concealed carry holster it is great because you do not draw the weapon as regularly as someone who uses it for duty. If you keep the weapon clean when you pick it up in the morning and clean when you put it away at night, you should not have a problem. If you are not allowed to carry concealed, consider a nice quality leather holster from Galco or Milt Sparks. Trust me, I wouldn't put a Wilson that retails for $1900 in a $50 holster if I had bad experience with the one for my glock. Hope this helps.

The problem with scuffing from most holsters (and Kydex in particular), is not the holster material itself, but the grit and dirt that gets trapped between the gun and the holster. Keep the holster clean inside, and you will keep scuffing to a minimum.

Wear marks add character to your gun anyway - don't worry about it! It shows that your gun has been used, not abused.

Often, people confuse material deposited from kydex (or other plastics) with gun finish wear. Obviously, anything can wear a finish, but as others have mentioned, keep the inside clean and resist the compulsion to holster and unholtser constantly. I really like the slickly-polished interior of G-Code holsters. Never noticed any finish wear with my G-30 in a G-Code. I carry a stainless Kimber in a Fobus (not really kydex) and have seen no problems. Keep both the holster interior clean as well as the gun.

Also: Would a *light* coat of oil on the contact points between holster & gun help keep scuff marks to a minimum?

Anything I could LINE the kydex with to keep scuffing down? (ooohh...maybe tape!)

Would it harm the kydex?

More importantly, would it compromise the holsters retaining ability??? :(

Some folks use a little Armor All to slick things up, but the G-Code doesn't need it. (I have tried it in a Fobus.) Keep in mind that most of the retention is in the trigger guard area. I believe attempting to line the holster would compromise draw and eventually gum up the works. Most good kydex holsters are rentention adjustable. I've only owned three different brands but really liked two of them.
