many of my fixed blades that came in kydex sheaths such as the sog seal, the emerson la griffe always end up having the tips flattened when the knife is resheathed...(when the blade tip hits the side of the kydex sheath)
can anyone suggest any ways to prevent this??

Hey Nick....

Welcome to BF...

I'm not sure what you mean by Having the "Tips Flattened"?

Please explain it a little better and I'll try to help you sort it out...

the tip becomes flattened...something like if you were to drop your knife point down on to the concrete floor instead of a needle point, you end up with a flattened tip

Ive never had that problem...Ive got two La Griffe's each with a different sheath (old and new style) The new style catches a little by the end of the blade when I put in into the sheath but no problems with the tip.

Hey Nick....

Hmmm Strange!!!

Is the blade maybe contacting something inside like a screw,,rivit,,or eyelet?

Kydex won't bother a tip..

Hold the knife up against the outside of the sheath..Maybe the sheath is short and the blade it bottoming out onto a screw or something...

This is a first I've heard of anything like this happening...

I really don't think it's the fault of the kydex,,it's something inside the sheath,,maybe a small stone or something....

If you would like to send it to me,, I can have a look at it for you.. Without seeing it,,my educated guess is that theres something inside,,or the blade is hitting somewhere..

Drop me a note via e-mail if you'd like to chat about it...

Hey Nick...

Hmm I think I understand your diagram....

I firmly rest that the kydex is Not bending or damaging the tip of your knife !!!

you may want to have a talk with SOG !!
I didn't realize where you were and sending the blade,,may not be practical...

Hi Nick,

I agree with the other comments here. Hummm...Strange...

There is nothing about the Kydex sheath which will ding a knife tip. I have my SEAL Kydex sheath right here on my desk, and there is no steel in or on the sheath within range of the tip. If it comes to plastic vs. steel, steel will prevail.

There are only two options I can see. First, the tip is being dinged outside the sheath. Second, there is possibly an obstruction (such as a rock) inside the sheath.

SOG maintains a wonderful warranty return policy. If the sheath is defective, we'll take great care of you! Even if the tip damage is not under warranty, we will regrind the tip for you and return your knife to you as good as new. If you would like to return the knife to us for evaluation, please give me a call for return instructions.

Hey Ron...

Thanks for backing me on my theory..

There has to be something in the sheath causing it,, as far as I'm concerned..

Unless you guys at SOG are using that new Depleated Uranium Kydex..

Great Knives BTW...
Actually I just sheathed a Pentagon and a NW Ranger I believe it was.. Didn't want to send them back..

thanx guyz!! i had a look and true enough there was a thin piece of magnet stuck to the side of the sheath...i brought it back to the shop and was told that they placed the magnet there to keep the knife in the sheath...i have removed it.thanx a lot..btw, is there any sog dealer in singapore where i can send my knife for sharpening???

Hi Nick,

Ahhhh...the old "magnet in the sheath" trick to keep the knife in place. With that, there is no longer the need for the restraining strap or the crossguard snap-in lock. I'll forward this quickly to SOG's research and development department for possible inclusion in future models. Two restraining devises are never enough for a knife. (Need I insult anyones intelligence here and say I'm just joking?...Being a SOG company rep, better to be safe than sorry.)

Eric...Uranium Kydex? Darn...the secret's out! (And Eric...you were right about the "rock"!)

Regarding sharpening, check your phone book for quality knife sharpening companies in your area. I recommend seeing their work before allowing them to touch your knife. There are "professionals" out there who just don't have a clue!

I'm sincerely glad the problem is resolved.

Hey Nick....

Search out a bladesmith in your area.. Must be some..Don't let some Yuk with a grinding wheel touch your blade....

Ron....

Yup I knew it had to be something in there.. I was close...
You guys aren't using magnets are you ??

Didn't know anyone other than Nealy was using magnets in conjunction with Kydex...

Never did understand the use of them in a kydex sheath...

That's like wearing two condoms!!

Boker uses them - but it is Nealy´s design. They are quite strong as my friend could tell you. He had to replace all his credit cards

Hey Ron....

Yes I agree 100%....

If the knife fits... Wear it!
Absolutely Positively No Need for a magnet in a Concealex sheath,,What so Ever.

Unless someone can give me a legit reason!

David..
Poof,, Magnetic info...Gone!

Eel skin has the same effect on credits cards!!!

Something to think about next time you are using your ATM card at 2am!!
