Don't you think that a thinner edge would cut MUCH better than 30 deg. that Ernie put on La Griffe?
I've just bought La Griffe. It's a perfect size and shape neck knife for me and I like it a lot. But IMO it's quit hard to cut through 0,5" manila rope with just one cut. This is a rescue knife, so it should be SHARP and should cut with ease. I think I'll try to regrind the cutting edge to 20 deg. or even 17 to make it really shaving sharp.

Is it worth doing? I hope so...

I would imagine that any rope or cord you would have to take a slash at in order to save someone's life would probably be under tension and that changes everything instantly. If the rope has a load on it and it is taut, that's entirely different from cutting free-hanging hemp rope.

If you're cutting free hanging rope that does not have a load on it, sharpness, speed, edge orientation [skill] rule the day.

I have tested the LaGriffe on various mediums, including meat in denim [no jokes] and it has performed well. I carry one around the neck as the "ultimate rescue knife," to cut someone off of me.

And the same goes for a knife...

They make a "White Water Rescue" that has a fully serrated edge, it may be more to your liking.

Like Don, I invision my La Griffe for as a fighting (rescue) tool tool. I can't really see myself cutting rope or peeling car doors with it. I have other tools for that.

Basically, it's a claw I wasn't born with.

Ohhh, while it doesn't do well at the "rope" test, your going to find it's jam up at the "Spine whack" test.

Hi again,

I'm more Emerson Knives fan than you can imagine. I did change the edge angle at my La Griffe and now it cuts! It's a rescue and selfdefense tool like no other. I'm taking it with me on a 5 day fishing trip next week, so I'll tell you how performs this small handy claw.
BTW, yesterday a friend of mine said that LaG is "just an expencive piece of steel". I said "yeah, but worth every penny".
