lanyard replacement question

I had been wanting to add a little color to my large plain sebbie, finally found some 1/8" accessory cord for a lanyard.

Now, here's my question. What do I do to keep the 'cut' ends from unraveling/fraying?
The stock CRK lanyard looks almost as if the ends have been coated with a wax or other substance that caused it to become rather hard.

Also, does one do anything special to "finish" the ends? Or do you just simply cut them? I ask, since the white inner core shows if you simply cut it off straight. Is there a way to "round" them, like the CRK one?

Any ideas??

Slag,
heat the ends over a flame, gently, don't let it catch fire, it's a petroleum based product and will melt nicely.

Brian,

I suppose that was probably a "no-brainer", but your help was really appreciated, regardless

It worked great!

Slag, where did you get the lanyard, and what colors are available?

On an earlier thread of 2/18/2000 I wrote:
"My decorated Sebenza has a blue design on it. I want to compliment it with a blue lanyard. Where can I find such material? I've looked at hardware and boat stores but their nylon lines are too thick or the wrong color."

No one could locate one of the proper diameter, but on another poster's suggestion I found a sunglass cord of approximately the right size at the Sunglass Hut. My Sebenza looks nice. I think they also had black and red.

Any mountian climbing store should have it ..By me There is eastern mountian sports,
They have a good selection the size is around 2mm..

sorry for the delay.........
rodmeister,
i actually got the lanyard material at a local gun/knife show. it was really accessory cord for climbing that they had in big spools. I just needed 2ft.(only used about 1.5ft). It was primarily olive green with some navy flecks. Diameter was 1/8", or 3mm. It is larger than the stock lanyard, but fit fine, and also looks fine on my large sebbie. It may be too big looking for a small, though. There was a smaller size available, but at the time it just looked too small.
I imagine that the stock lanyard is 3/32" roughly, that's a smidge over 2mm(though I'm sure they are considered the same in this case).
Also, the Scheel's (outdoor superstore) by where I live usually carries the 3mm accessory cord, along with para cord. Not sure of available colors, as they had none in stock when I went.

Not sure about sunglass cord, but I like the accessory cord because you can "flame finish" the cut ends(as I recently found out--gotta love that petroleum

). And it is super strong, just in case you have to rescue a 300lb guy stuck on a cliff with your sebbie lanyard.

For those that want really wild colors, there are some strechy coiled shoe strings you can buy at walmart and such. They have purple, pinks, flecks, stripes, etc.

The coil effect it built in, but it might
work out fine.

wild colored lanyard material can be obtained from rei and from campmor....both places have websites.....you can also go to any camping/hiking/outdoors shop and obtain it...feverdoc

As a knot-tyer by hobby, I was fascinated the first time I saw a Chris Reeve knife at a local gun and knife show, because of his use of synthetic utility cord in his knotted lanyards. It looks to me like a relatively simple multiple overhand knot, though since I don't own a CRK I can't say. (Give me a break, they're expensive and I'm trying to save up! I'll get one eventually!)
As far as the cord is concerned, the round synthetic cord he uses is similar to a type I buy at a local outfitter called Backpacker's General Store, here in West Palm Beach, FL. Call the store at 561 689 HIKE, and speak with Glenn, the owner. Ask him about the 50 or 100 ft. packets of camping cord that Jeffrey always buys, and he may be able and willing to sell you some and ship it to you. He is not in the mail-order business, and so he may be resistant to doing so, I dunno, but try. He's a helluva nice guy. The cord is available in black or white: I often buy the white and then use Rit fabric dye (available at any craft store and some supermarkets) and use a standard drink pitcher full of hot water and dye 100 feet at a time with one packet of dye, mixing for an hour, soaking overnight, then rinsing and drying. The Royal Blue dye makes the white cord come out very handsome. Kelly Green is also nice. They don't seem to have a very good red, just Crimson, which is not so much red as maroon on drying. Anyway, good luck. Peace.

peacefuljeffery...the knot in question is nothing more than a hangman's noose (with equal ends)....simple...effective.....easy to tie...feverdoc

Ok, back to the colored lanyards. For those of you who live near the coast. Go to K-Mart or Wal-Mart and get a pack of Scotchline Crab Line it comes in 48' packs (You wont need much). For those fo you inland i'm not sure where to get this stuff. The Rit deye thing works awesome on this stuff. You only need to use about 3qts. of water. Put it in a Large pan add the color dye you want along with a cup of salt and bring that to a boil. Uncoil the line, wad it into a ball, and drop it in. The longer it soaks the darker it gets.

For RED use Rit "Scarlet deye"
For Blue use Rit "ROYAL BLUE"
For Orange use Rit"Golden Yellow"

That is all i've tried so far. Gonna try for a bright green, grey, and true yellow. This would also be great for wrapping the handles of skeleton knives. I have a Stiff KISS that the red looks great on, plus it can make the knife easier to find. Maybe Glow-In-The-Dark is next.

Just remember that you may one day end up hanging by your lanyard. You may not wish to make it TOO strong.

In addition, the hangman's noose will tightly close on your wrist, making it difficult, if not impossible, to slip your hand out. Walt

The very best stuff for lanyards is 550 cord or paracord. Go to u-braid-it braiding supply's website. They sell it by the foot, or on a 500' roll for about 25.00. More than enough for a few lanyards. It's available in several colors. check it out.

Holymoly nailed right on the head. I went to Eastern Mountain Sports and they have several differenttypes of cord, and that's just what I did to snaz up my sebenza. And THEY cut it for me. It took 18" for my small sebenza and I put a cool red, blue and reflective silver cord on it. I'm personally tired of everything being black, and I enjoy personalizing my collection.
