Okay, I see this in almost every Multi Tool...What is the purpose it serves? I mean, what can it really do that makes it go on almost every Multi-Tool?

In many lines of work it's very important to have "insurance" if you drop a tool. A lanyard tied to you and then tied to your tool keeps the tool from going somewhere you can't go if you lose your grip on it. I have a friend who replaces bulbs on radio transmission towers. He spends much of his day over 300 ft above the ground. If he loses a tool, it's a long long way down and a long time to recover it. His situation may be more extreme than most, but I'm sure many other people also need their tools tied to them with a cord to avoid loss.

I live on a river and have a few boats (more than I need, that's for sure) plus I do a fair bit of blue water sailing. Whenever I work on the boats, and over the water, I use a lanyard.
