How many of you guys use a lanyard on your knifes? I have been experimenting with plaiting up a Akabu style lanyard loops and was curious if you found them helpful.
Heres mine out of stripped paracord.

I use blaze orange lanyards.I tie one end to the knife, the other forms a knot that will slide back and forth on the lanyard. It's a little tricky, and I found it out by accident. But the length is long enough to use it as a thumb lanyard, but also, I can put it on my wrist and tighten it up so it won't fall off if I drop it. I tie another knot int he lanyard to keep the slip loop from becoming a noose on my wrist.

Hint when using paracord: to make it even more secure, once the thing is tied how you want, melt the knots, they'll never come undone.

I understand using a lanyard for holding the knife to your wrist but is there other purposes for them, or is it a personal thing. Just Curious?

I use either black or orange gutted paracord. I just fold the proper length of cord, then tie a overhand knot in it. I run about 2 inches of the cord thru the hole in the knife, then loop the other end thru it. Now I have a simple lanyard that works and is easily removed.

I have lanyards on several of my knives, but unless I'm working in a condition where I might lose my grip, drop it, I'm chopping, or something like that, I don't put my hand through it. Mostly it's just a way for me to keep up with them if I set them down. All of my lanyards are neon orange, neon yellow, etc.

yo hwpaintballer, i also live in the great Richlands, Va. I also play paintball, im sure i know you from somewhere

I use this hangman's noose thing by Chris Reeve called the "Reeve Coil." It works perfect for me:

 :D I use the same type lanyard. Its easy to do, looks good, and adds a little bit extra grip for them smaller knives.

I had a redneck uncle who may or may not have at one time been in "the clan". He taught my brother and I how to tie this type of "lanyard knot" when we were tiny kids. Then, my mother went ape$#!* on him and told him to keep his hood the hell away from her children.

Yes, there are other reasons... Certain lanyard grips are better for preventing your hand from sliding forward onto the blade (specifically, using your thumb with the lanyard across the back of the hand). Putting the lanyard around your wrist and extending your hand to the end of the handle will give you a better swing for chopping. Some lanyards are tied in a way to offer a better grip to a knife that is carried deep in a pocket. Of course, there is the visibility aspect, mentioned in some posts above. In the end, yes, I think it is a personal thing. It is all about the options the user wants to have in gripping the knife, as well as style.

Did I miss some uses? Anyone, feel free to add to my list of lanyard uses.

I use the *ahem* Reeve knot on the ones I tie myself. I also use reflective 550 paracord. If you've ever dropped a coated blade at night, the reflective paracord "pops" when any light gets near it.

Eric Issacson's daughter makes some great custom lanyards. She just made 8 for me out of the reflective paracord. $ 3 a piece shipped for a 4" square sinnet with a 2" loop.

For EDC, pocket carry. The lanyard can hang outside the pocket and make it easy to grab the knife.

That's a good looking lanyard. Did you do that yourself? If so, is that a simple braid or something else? And where do you score the plastic keeper on the end?

It's called a snake knot, it's very easy to do.
This picture shows it a bit better,

If you want 2 colors in it, simply melt 2 pieces of paracord together. Here's a tutorial on the knot,
http://www.satincord.com/knots/snakeknot.htm

I just keep repeating the first and second step over and over again, I can't get it right if I follow the other steps.

The plastic keeper glows in the dark, really bright too, the pic doesn't do it justice,
