Anyone know who still makes a quality large stockman (4 1/4") in bone and decent steel?

I am looking into ordering a case 6375 in CV and amber bone. I know they make the pattern in yellow comp. and CV and the dark red silver script and surgical steel, but I was wondering who still makes a good large stockman?

I know buckcreek use to, I think queen still makes one, but has anyone noticed its getting increasingly hard to have a good choice of large qaulity stockmans?

Hey rev,
Some of the German companies like Boker & Eye Brand still have large stockman knives. I think Eye Brand makes most of theirs in carbon steel. I don't own either of these brands, but steel from Solingen has a generally good reputation.
Schatt & Morgan (owned by Queen, I think) makes some, too.
Even if you don't buy from them, do a search on "stockman" at Smoky Mountain Knife Works' web site. You can see several brands of stockmans (stockmen? :) ) and can easily click through to see which ones are larger size.

I have a large Eye Brand stockman in my regular carry rotation. It is stag, not bone, but I have been very happy with it. Their knives are a little rough in the finish but the fit is very good and the steel is top notch. I think they only have stag and composite offerings, I am not sure if they offer bone. It is a great user though.

Queen offers the #49 Cattle King in carved stag bone and D2....4-1/4" closed length.

Of the Solingen brands, try maybe Buck Creek.

Thanks guys I appreciate it! I actually did look on their site, decided to order the CA6375 stockman in the CV and amber bone.

They have allot of items out of stock with Christmas just over.

Wow, they have some nice knives. Ive never seen their site before. Tell me are they making their own knives, or out on contract? They seem to resemble blue grasses work.

Checkout e-bay for a Buck 307 Stockman (4 1/4 closed). I carry
one of these knives (made by Camillus for Buck) finding it to be
a VERY useful knife.

rev_jch,
Queen makes the bone and stag handled knives for MooreMaker.....they do look like Blue Grass Winchesters, 'cause Queen made those as well. ;)

Camillus makes the buffalo horn handles and the working knives for them.

Both seem to be to strict specs...quite nicely done.

You can see some more at Big Bend Saddlery (Thank knifeaholic for that info).

Hey Rev., if you get that Case in CV, let me know what you think. I've been eyeballin that for a while now and would appreciate a firsthand review. Looks like a winner, but I haven't been able to commit. A good review will probably have me checking under the couch cushions for change.

OTguy - I have two of the large 4.25" stockman knives: Case 6375 and Eye Brand with yellow composite handle. I have a hard time choosing between them, both are well made. Although it is frequently said that Eye Brand can be a little rough around the edges while having excellent blades, in my case it also is great in the fit & finish. I have two Case Cr-V knives, the 6375 and a 63032. My 6375 seems to have a better heat treat, and I really like the way the main blade is ground, they did a good job on mine. Smooth blade opening and closing with great snap, too. If you are looking for a large stockman, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the 6375 (or the large Eye Brand, or Queen Cattle King, too. You might as well get all three, and maybe even a Mooremaker, that way you can rotate them and never get bored).

First of all.... the large Stockman really isn't "my kind of knife" (Actually its clip blade length - over 3" - makes it an illegal carry knife here in the UK). However, I still couldn't resist buying one ;)

Mine is a modern (2004) bog standard Case Yellow Handle 3375CV (carbon steel). And actually, it is one helluva knife. All three blades had absolutely no trouble in shaving the hair off the back of my hand with light strokes - straight out of the box.

The sheepfoot blade feels as though you can really lean on it for serious hard cutting. But at the same time, that blade is the "weakest" feature of the knife, in that being the centre blade, it just rubs against the clip blade as it closes. To be honest, it is a very light contact at one point, and that is the only thing that I can find wrong with the knife. None of the blades are hard to open.

The other two blades have a snap like the lid on a Sherman Tank :D

Yup.... its a great working knife, with an exceedingly good finish.

Cheers
Rod

PS. OTguy.... go for it!! You cannot be disappointed.

Thanks for all the help guys, its much appreciated! :)

I already have a 6375 in green bone, had it for many years. the only complaint I have about it, is the "surgical stainless" (of course). otherwise it is one great knife :)

I have an amber bone trapper in CV that's a pretty satisfactory "cutter".

For many years I carried an old yellow case trapper in CV. It turned every color in the rainbow, before I retired it!!!! It skinned deer, squirrel, rabbit, and cut many strings and was a good "whittler".

That's interesting abotu the moore makers, Im really interested in those!!! makes sense that quenn would make them, as many as they have made for others over the years, of course camillus hass made many for others also.

I have the 6375 in Cv and amber bone on its way to me, should be interesting!!!

I also just checked my tracking number and my laguiole's are waiting for me :D

Thanks for the reviews everyone. How about Boker? I got a one-armed razor jack off ebay last week and am really impressed with the quality, fit and finish are top shelf, so I've been checking out more Bokers lately and am actually about to pull the trigger on another of those razor jacks. Do their stockman measure up? Or should I hold out for the Case?

I have a standard 4" Boker stockman with rosewood handle and 1095 blades. Very well made, smooth blade action, great snap, well-ground blades. My experience with Boker carbon steel is that it doesn't hold an edge as long as the Case Cr-V, Eye Brand, or Kissing Crane. For 1095, they could do better.

I have a Case Large CV Amber Bone stockman. Although I now carry "tactical" knives the large stockman is hard to beat and my fav slipjoint. This knife is EASY to shapen, especially with a Lansky kit. With a 30 degree angle on each side of the main blade and sharpened to a coarse or medium grit it will cut like a dynamo and still shave hair. I like using steeper angles and higher polishes on the smaller blades but go with the 60 degree overall on the main blade and leave it a little rough for better edge retention and greater shearing/slicing ability, for push cutting I use the spey blade. With that setup on the main blade my stockman has been able to cut anything my spydercos can and still do a good job holding an edge while being easier to sharpen. Until I got hooked on Spydercos I didn't carry wouldn't own anything but a Case. I may get some flames for saying so but Case is in my opinion the top of the line in slipjoints for use or collecting. I think only Boker comes close. However I did like Oldtimers, they were my granddad's favorite and it is a shame Schrade is no longer with us, this from a diehard Case collector. ;)

I received the knives and they are niccceeee!!!! :) (first time in a long tim, Ive been completely satisfied with a case :D )
