I've had a Buck 317 Trailblazer in my toolbox for 25 years and fortunately
because it looked so nice I hardly ever used it and instead used
a bunch of cheapo chinese knives to do a lot of nasty dirty work.
My nephew had seen it and mentioned he would like one like it
and I went online only to find that six or eight of the biggest knife
makers that I knew of dont make any folding knives that large anymore.
I just assumed I would have dozens to choose from.

Now what I'd like to know is does any quality brand name mfg make
folding knives as large as 5.25 inches or larger (closed)?
What happened to the concept of folding to make more compact
and safe ? If I had had an open knife in my tool box for 25 years
I would be all cut up when digging around for stuff.

Way back when I thought there were some folding knives bigger
than the one I bought. ? ? ?

I think Cold Steel makes some pretty big knives. Haven't looked at their stuff for a while, but I am pretty sure there are pretty gig folders in their catalog (vasquero and something with 'grande' in it come to mind).

EDIT: Blazen beat me to it.

I was also looking for a large folder and after some research I found the Benchmade 610 Rukus and the Spyderco Manix C95. The Rukus is 5.95" closed with a 4.25" blade and the Manix is 5 1/16" closed with a blade length of 3.75".
I have both of these on their way to me as I couldn't decide which one...so I bought both :D

The Zero Tolerance 0200 has a blade of 3 & 7/8ths inches long. Closed, this huge folder is 5 & 1/4 inches long. It weighs in at 7.7 oz. It is rather thick and heavy, but very comfortable in the hand. This is truely a "man's knife".

Just checked and the Buck 317 Traulblazer is a 2 bladed folding hunter pattern. Case still makes these, along with a couple other large knives like the Cokebottle and Granddaddy Barlow. I think Kabar still produces a Folding Hunter, Queen does and I think you can find one from Schatt & Morgan. Check out www.cumberlandknifeworks.com for availability and some good prices, or www.newgraham.com for a lot of Case knives and excellent prices.

Mooremaker makes what they call the "Monster" it's 11.5 inches closed.

And then there is this.....

and yes I have held one :D

My Super CQC-7 has a 4" blade, it's about as big closed as I can fit into my pants pockets comfortably. Anything over 4" starts to get silly...

The Benchmade Rukus and the Skirmish are large folders.

If your buddy paid $100 for a BM LFK, well......well........then he paid $100 I guess. ((( :D )))

The Buck 317 was a 5-1/4" two bladed folding hunter pattern made for Buck by Camillus. I have folding hunters from Case, Queen, Bulldog (Olbertz), Weidsmanheil (Olbertz), Hen and Rooster (Boker), and Schrade, so they are still very much available. Case's pattern number for theirs is the 65, so look for knives like 6265 or 5265 from Case. Case 420HC stainless only unless you locate an older one in the cv steel. Queen's is the #39 pattern. Older ones are 440A or C stainless, the newer ones are D2, and excellent. The Olbertz built knives from Solingen, Germany are a tad shorter at 4-15/16" long. I have two in plain old carbon steel, the Bulldog brand and the new out Weidsmanheil branded one. Schrade and Camillus are out of business (the original companies anyways, new knives around with Schrade on them, maybe Camillus soon), but there are still quite a few of them in stock on store shelves around. Boker also still makes them, in carbon and stainless, jigged black delrin, wood, jigged bone and stainless I have seen, I believe the model number to look out for is #2020. There is also a #4020 but I think that is the double lockback model in 440C, and they are about $150 when you can find one, which is getting rare anymore. New Graham, Smokey Mountain Knife Works, Cumberland, Knivesshipfree, etc, should have some of several types. Look around, you'll find them. My favorite knife pattern. :)
