Hello Bladesmiths and Shop-Talkers, I am a beginning knifemaker who has just finished my first two blades. I believe they are ready to heat treat. How sharp do they need to be prior to HT? D-2 is the blade material. Is there any other details to check. Thanks, John.

It does not have to be sharp at all for HT. That should be the very last thing you do on the knife, after finishing the sheath etc.
Lightly countersink any handle pin holes so they dont have 90 deg., sharp corners. The same goes for any other areas of the knife that has right angles, with the exception of the outer profile. You dont want a sharp corner at the bottom of it.
Other than that, I can't think of anything.
A question though, have you ever heat treated D2 before, and do you know the requirements?

We'd sure like to see your work when you feel like sharing too. Congratulations on your first knives!

Dave

I intend to show off my stuff however I may have more difficulty posting a picture than making the blades. Well, as they say "The blades are in the mail". I think Ill jig some bone today.
