Okay Gadgeteers, it's a necessary evil. Mowing the lawn.......
what kind of lawnmower do you have. Any Tim Taylor creations out there?

A few more of these threads and we all should know each others boot size.;)

OK, I'll bite....I have a Snapper that I bought at Wal-Mart a year ago. Actually, I bought a Murray 18HP, 42" cut first that made it for two days before the belt started jumping off. I couldn't keep it on there, and then the damn battery was dead. The Murray was immediately loaded on my trailer and carried right back, and after about 5 minutes of arguing with them for a refund, I decided I would take one of the Snapper's of equal size. Of course I had to add some cash, but it was well worth the money.

I am thinking of taking off the gov, adding some slicks, and a NOS bottle.:p

Tim Taylor would be PROUD! Would this void my warranty?

I have a 6.5 HP Craftsman. I got it for the large back wheels because I had to go down 13 steps to get to the parking strip at the old house. The 6.5 HP version was the least powerful/expensive model that had the big rear wheels (which permitted me to roll the mower up and down the steps).

6.5 hp is really overkill for my yard, but the first time I mowed the lawn at the new house I saw some bamboo and brush i had been meaning to remove and thought "Hmmm . . ." A 6.5 HP mower with a new blade will do a lot :D

I'm also interested in Diesel engines and biodiesel. One of these days I'd like to put a Robin Diesel engine on the Craftsman or something else.

Self-propelled - John Deere SB 14 (5hp Kaw motor)
Garden Tractor - John Deere GT 225 (15hp K-series motor)

Used to maintain 2.47 acres. I purchased the SB 14 in 1995, and the GT 225 in 1999. Before I bought the GT 225, I had a 17hp MTD. Decent mower for the money, but after 2 seasons you could tell it was not built to last very long.
My plan is to keep each of the JD's for 10 years, then buy the current replacements. Even after 10 years, I anticipate selling them for 50-65% of original retail. I can't say enough good things about these mowers. It's like the salesman told me "If you ride one, you'll buy one".

He was right :D

sore subject. I bought a Noma brand new in 1987 and just never used it. The 18HP has less than 40 hours on it. noma of course is long gone. The tractor has four wheel steering.

Well I changed the oil, put on new blades and new belts and a new battery and fired her up. Sounded cherry. off I went and made my first turn. The right rear wheel went way too far right and a steering gear snapped. No ONE has this part, it cannot be had, I am screwed.

I have a very old Toro push mower that starts but mowing almost an acre of Lawn this way suks.

Now I either find some one to make me a gear [that is assuming I can get to it and they can figure the size from the manual that only shows a schematic and a part number since the other one exploded into pieces] or mount this 18HP Briggs and stratton on the push mower and HOLD ON!!!!

Anyone wanna trade a beautiful V-Twin 18HP tractor that runs great in ONE SPOT for a lawn mower?:( :( :(

I refused to hold off buying my R/C truck so I am back sleeping in the garage!!!

I bought a returned, like-new Honda at Home Depot for $299 a couple years ago. Self-propelled, quiet, one-pull start, works like a charm and trouble free.

Unlike the piece of sears craftsman mower I threw in the garbage truck right before I bought the Honda.

Stay away from Sears; they are disposable mowers.

Thanks,
Steve

john Deere is the ferrari of lawn tractors, anybody who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves:p

my dad also has a 60 year old international harvester with a 6 foot mowing deck, two GE electric tractors from the 70s with every freakin attachment known to man, and 4 pushmowers.

John Deere 445 garden tractor with 60" mowing deck. Power steering, water cooled, fuel injected.

Makes quick work of the three acres I mow. :D

Yeah, John Deere makes some good stuff too.

On a John Deere note, we have a 85-hp John Deere 2950 with a 1018 10' mower deck that I just spent 5 air-conditioned hours mowing our farm/ranch with this week. I guess I mowed 25 acres in that time. It's great to run over 4 inch thick trees and look back and see a pile of mulch behind me.

Hilly terrain and rocky soil limits ground speed though...

Y'all take care,
Steve

Steve, now thats what i call lawn mowing:eek:

does that air conditioned monster have a cup holder for your favorite beverage and some music to humm to while mowing?

If the answer is yes, is it the right size to mow my less than an acre lawn?

What's 40 grand anyway:eek:

My dad gave me his hand me down riding mower when he purchased two new ones. We had this commercial quality riding mower that was purchased from the city of Pensacola, FL. The brand name is Heckendorn or Hekendorn. The deck is made from the thickest solid steel I have ever seen on a riding mower. It has been in our family since the mid 1980's and is still going strong. The steel deck cannot be wore out. The 10 hp Kohler engine has been rebuilt a few times and that's about it. It has multiple grease fittings. Just lubricate it and go.
It may not be pretty with it's handle bar steering but it's one durable mower.

2 year old Honda rear engine riding mower, fun little rider. Great little 11 hp engine hauls me around the yard at a nice clip.

I've got you all beat. I have a 11yr old cousin that cut's our lawn for five bucks. All I supply is gas.:D

Some piece of crap with "The Champion" printed on the deck. Paid about $150 Cdn. for it at Zellers (like Wal-Mart). Had it for 6+ years now. I keep hoping it will crap out but it never dies. When it does croak, it will be a Deere or Honda next.

I have a Sears Craftsman push mower (the old style rotary). I bought it because I had just bought a townhome with a 25x10' frontyard and a 25x35' or so backyard. It works reasonably well if you keep on top of things and the grass is green and lush. Let the grass get too tall or too dry and it's a PITA. It is nice and quiet and I don't have to deal with fuel, power cords, etc.

My neighbor bought a Black and Decker electric mower this summer. After borrowing it a few times ('cause I let my grass get too tall for my mower :barf: ), I've decided I'll be buying the same thing this fall (hoping for end of season price cuts). It's quiet, mulches, and will cut any length grass.

All in all, grass sucks. It doesn't produce anything of value and is too sensitive to heat and dry weather. The only grass I like is the Centipede grass that grows in Eastern NC. It's like walking on a shag carpet...

Mine is red.

I think.

Somewhere under all the dirt and gunk and grass and greasy oily sludge, I think it's red.

I have an owner's manual around the house for a Craftsman mower. I think it's for the one in the garage. Old POS. Pump the little rubber primer bulby-thing 15 or 20 times, and it starts first or second pull, every time. It was free to me, so it's disposable when it finally dies.

I hate lawns. Weeds and watering and edging and cutting... I've got other things to do, like sit back on the deck with a cold one. Hell, I put the deck in so I'd have less lawn to mow.

You don't have to mow rocks. Maybe a rock garden, front and back...

Fine timing on this thread...

I just bought a 1971 Ford LGT165 garden tractor... 16 hp & hydro drive. It has a full hard cab (cozy cab) and both a 42" snowblower and a 42" mower deck. Starts and runs great (smokes a little at start up otherwise it's solid) Figure I Stole the thing for only $575 bucks..!:D One solid tractor, steel tube frame, cast iron axle/trans/pump and a single cyl. Kohler. It's going to be my main snow machine this winter.

I've got a newer John Deere 227LX with 17 hp V twin and 48" deck for mowing the yard... 3.5 acers. Wife thought I was nuts but I told her we couldn't put a blower on the JD for under $600 and the full cab is a bonus.

Now she tells me I need a "red" tractor to complete the set...;D I said, why stop there... a yellow case or cub cadet could make it 4.
She just rolled her eyes:rolleyes:

My landlord cuts my lawn. :D Before that it was a Quarter Horse named Cisco.
