leather steering wheels and knife clips

This is probably a question that some of the leather work guys will likely know how to answer more than anyone else, but there are 2 parts to it.

I bought a new car a week ago, and its my first Sedan (been driving SUVs for the majority of my life) and i was amazed at how low i could put the steering wheel as i like the steering wheel low. I started noticing scratches on the bottom of the steering wheel where the leather has actually been scratched and the top layer is lifted off the wheel... ARGH! brand new car and i busted it it up already. I figured out where it came from, and it was from the knife clipped to my pocket!! how frustrating.. I've been very careful from now on getting into the car not to let it touch but its a pain.. my questions are:

1. Anyone know a good way to repair the damage to the steering wheel? The leather is a medium gray, it is not the shiny kind of steering wheel leather, its a softer type.. car is a Cadillac CTS if that helps any.

2. Any way to carry the knife so that this doesn't happen while still maintaining the easy of access of having it clipped to the pocket?

A lot of people carry their edc in the back pocket, but I assume that might mess up the seats? Either put it in the left pocket or use a sheath.

To prevent it from happening again, since it sounds like it's been happening as you get into the car, you could always put the steering wheel up high every time you get out, and then bring it down to the level you like after you get in each time. It might be time consuming, but it sounds like trying to get in without bumping it they way you are now might be at least as time consuming, and perhaps more difficult, so if you don't find anything better it might be worth a try.

Man, I thought I was the only one with this problem.... Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution. I tilt my wheel as high as it will go and I still catch it once and a while.... My clip is also tearing up my center console.... Sucks, but I caught the damage too late..... Good luck

Would carrying in the waistband help? Otherwise I suggest unclipping it and storing it close by for the duration of the drive.

I have had this problem for years. Rather than adjusting your carry style I would suggest changing the way you get out of your car. Instead of rolling your right hip, slide to the left to get out from under the wheel the roll when you have clearance. With practice it's pretty easy and works for me.

I also use steering wheel covers that are easy to change out so if, and when, I do tear them up it's only $10 instead of a lot more for a steering wheel. They work well over even factory padded wheels.

Forget about the steering wheel. Is it damaging the KNIFE? If it's a qulaity knife, get a padded steering wheel cover to protect the knife!

:D Was thinking something similar.

Get a nice leather belt sheath for the folder or dip the clip in that tool coating stuff that leaves a grippy rubber-like surface on it.
