I recently picked up a lightly used Reeves double bit with an ash handle. I immediately noticed that the head was a little loose when I took it out of the box. I contacted Lee and he thought the wood probably shrank over time and would be glad to fix it for free. I decided to try fixing it myself with a steel wedge (his alternate suggestion). I can assure you I was a little nervous about doing this to one of Lee's masterpieces
. I am pleased the way it turned out and finished it up with a coating of epoxy. I wish I had a bit more angle on the wedge but it's not bad.
The next day I tried it out on a dry oak limb and it performed perfectly. Man that oak was some hard stuff, even with Lee's super sharp edge I had to work hard to get though that thing.
Also pictured is my double bit with a curly maple handle. I picked up the ash because I just couldn't bring myself to use that one. It's just too pretty!
