I seem to be stuck (or perhaps "stuck-up") on the issue of blade coatings. There seem to be as many varieties of coatings for knives as there are knife makers. I have always had a personal dislike for blade coatings, and it has less to do with experience than principle. Imagine you have built or purchased a beautiful solid cherry dinning room set. It is unfinished. Do you:

A) Prime and coat it with an ultra durable white paint?
B) Sand and stain and seal?
C) Leave natural with a light coat of wax or shellac?

No need to answer the question. It was rhetorical. But I hope you see my point, and better understand my position. Such is my conundrum when considering blade coatings.

What I would like to accomplish with this thread, is to round up opinions and experiences with the different types and sub-types of coatings. Please include any lore you may have about the actual proccesses involved with diefferent coatings. I will compile the vital data here in the first post as it comes along. Let me start out with this one:

Type Coating/Manufacture/Model/Experience (Second line)

Teflon/Gerber/Mini-Ridge
30-40% wear-thru in 4 months of pocket carry on key chain.
