Here's another Ebay khukuri, which lead me to ask a general historical question about khukuris:

Are there historical examples of khukuris with lion's heads on the buttcap? I know that repro indian ones exist (saw many in Nepal!), and generally speaking, repros are usually modeled after a "real thing."

Thoughts?

Craig, the above-pictured khukuri is practically identical to the one I used to own and described in my first post to this forum. I have since researched my own limited reference resources and the only variations I have found are disk guards and pommels with occasional geometric engravings. The oldest examples I have seen illustrated are from the 1600's. I would be very interested to learn what authentic variations are out there from someone with some real expertise.
I love these knives. Can't learn enough about them.

There are lion buttcaps around. They reflect the Brit influence.
The Brit gurkhas have a lot more prestige than the gorkhas that hire out to India.

You're correct on that one! I'm going to be "copying" an old article on gurkhas from a Nepal tourist magazine that I think you'll find very intersting (all about how they are recruited). I also have a GREAT BBC tape on the Gurkha. As soon as I can figure out how to distribute it without violating copywrite, I'll offer it to the forumites.

FNG,

It may be my imagination, and probably is, but I have a feeling you have been with us before, a while ago. If my feeling is correct, then I can only say it's good to see you Sir. You have been missed.

If it is in fact my imagination playing games with me, Then I apologise FNG and wish you a hearty welcome to the GH forum. Come back often, there is a lot we can learn from each other.

Craig, it has been kind of a slow week, so I am a little short of being able to make the opening bid. Actually, I'm sure that, once this rare opportunity becomes known, there will be a spirited bidding war involving the National Knife Museum, The Smithsonian, and the P.T. Barnum Museum

Berk: I have prayed for a slow week for months - I guess God pulled through - and gave it to you!!!!

Seriously, I always avoid, unless covered by www.i-escrow.com, buying things that don't speak for themselves - that is, anything on Ebay that contains "collector value" based on authenticity - I shy away from unless protected. As I'm an avid German Dagger collector, that means passing on most nice items I see.
