Ok, forgive me, I can' search here, I just got a BRKT strop and both compounds, the instructions have left m kinda scratchin my head, with hold the strop 90 deg, and hold a flame to it, can I get some help here please???? how much should the compound "melt into the leather"? should the compound be a dry film on top of the strop? how much do I need to heat the compound? thank ahead

Forget the heat! Don't do it! If there's already compound on it, scrape it off, right down to the leather.

Then, or if it's plain leather and has a slick surface, lightly sand it with a fine sandpaper. Be sure to use a block to keep things level. If the leather is clean and slightly rough (ie, it's already sanded), you're ready to go.

Now just crayon the compound on. You don't need anything like complete coverage - something like this is fine:

Good luck with it! It should take your sharp edge (convex or not) to hair popping!

aha! now that sounds more like it, nice and simple! thanks, will the black compound actually sharpen, or just hone?

Neither will "sharpen" like wet/dry sandpaper - but honing is a ultra fine version of sharpening.

If you take a couple strokes on either pretty regularly, your knife will stay very sharp a long time.

You can also take some mineral oil and rub it into the leather and compound, this helps spread the compound evenly and conditions the leather a bit.

If you want to clean old compound from your strop before applying new, try this. Rub on a lanolin type grease-dissolving hand cleaner like Go-Jo (without any abrasive like pumice) and wipe off.
