Is the force required to depress the lock release correlated with lock strength or resistance to spine "whack" failure? I was a little surprised the Manix' release was easier to push than a Bucklite I have. When purchasing a Spyderco lockback, would it be worthwhile to ask to handle a few and pick the one that had a lock release that was hardest to push as well as having the least blade wiggle in the open position? Overall the Manix felt very solid though. Just a little concerned after reading the Manix Spine Whack thread.

Duke, unless you plan on hammering 10d nails into oak with the spine of the blade, the results of that paricular "spine whack" test are nothing to be concerned about. I would go as far as to say that if you don't fully trust the lock on a Manix, you should seriously consider carrying a fixed blade.

When you compare the release action of any Spyderco front lock to a Bucklite, you are comparing two similar looking but mechanically different locks. I have several Buck lockbacks, and hundreds of Spyderco front locks, and the Spyderco lock that is hardest to depress is still considerably easier than the easist to depress Buck.
